In France during the 1980s and 90s, two men invented a new technique for seizing power: communication. Gérard Colé and Claude Pilhan brought politics out of the dustbin of propaganda. They were François Mitterrand's men behind the scenes. Jacques Pilhan repeated this feat with Jacques Chirac, introducing his daughter, Claude Chirac, to his political secrets. Far removed from the clichés about image in politics, the story of these "spin doctors," as the Americans call these marketing strategists, offers new insights into the upcoming presidential elections. It's a story that proves that while polls may condemn a candidate, communication can ultimately lead to victory. Between tactics to destroy the opponent and anticipating voters' expectations, this film paints a portrait of expert manipulators, players, and orchestrators of modern power. "Becoming President and Staying There" reveals to the public the media machinations of twenty years of exercising power in France.
