Your Honor, thank you for your story! It actually hits very close to home! I am a former police officer. I left that job after responding to a neighborhood dispute where the victim of that dispute was a foster mother….. of babies, newborns, prenatal exposed to drugs, and alcohol. At the end of the night, I went home and told my husband about responding to this call. I basically just told him that I wanted to become a foster mother And take care of babies, born prenatal exposed to drugs and alcohol. He told me to quit my job and he said we’ll go to classes to become foster parents and we did. Since then I have raised more than 28 babies for two different states that were born prenatal exposed. I actually quit being a Foster Parent because my first child I had taken was a little black boy that I raised for just over two years, but they refused to allow me to adopt him because I was white. They asked me how I would raise him to be black. My comment was he was already black. I thought the comment that was made by the social workers was very racist! I fought it and took it to court. The NAACP backed me, but the social workers literally got in court and lied, stating that they thought I could be making the child sick. That comment coming from them after having just been awarded a special certificate for doing my job as a Foster parent. The very next day, social services called and told me to have the child ready because he was going to a new foster home, which I actually found out was another white Foster home. I did decide to quit Foster parenting because of it. Then a friend of mine was doing a Bible ministry in the women’s jail in Norfolk, Virginia. She called me and asked me if I was willing to take a child of a woman in jail and raise that child, and I said yes!!! the woman was in jail for prostitution and use of drugs and alcohol! I raised that child, a little girl… and she is still with me! She is 32 years old!! she has autism, but she is very bright! Almost 2 years ago I had a stroke which has left me bedriden! I am now 73 years old, Mary to a wonderful man for almost 23 years now, and my daughter is helping to take care of my needs! Money is tight, but it will all work out! I am looking for a job that I can work from home, or when I get my wheelchair that is being specially made for me. I will go out to work. I’m telling you this because I just want you to understand that I am thanking you for taking the time to hear the whole story from that person that was standing in front of you for stealing food. I firmly believe that the courts… The judges… Never get the whole story, because there’s not enough time in the day to listen to all of the stories! But I just wanted to say thank you for listening when you are able!
