Thank you sam this is great information to have especially for new knife makers who may not have the expensive grinder or mill to try to achieve flatness

Didn't know about draw filing with my left hand thanks for the tip! 👍👍

This is awesome Sam!  Thanks for taking the time to share it with us

As a green woodworker making kitchen utensils, I have found draw filing to be a real boon, especially in difficult grain patterns.

Im an aussie thats recently started and after making 3 blades, a dagger, skinning knife and kukri, Ive probably watched/listened to 10 videos of yours that have been crucial to my understanding of the processes for blacksmithing and knife making. Really fantastic info laid out in plain text without too much "youtuber flair". I really appreciate you Sam, truly.

I only now just realised i hadn't even subbed lmao, that is now corrected.

That mirror 400 grit finish 🤯

i very very much appreciated this video. I reached out on reddit about finding a video exactly like this and this was recommended right away. thank you for taking the time to go through this!

Yes! This is what I've been looking for for months now! I really appreciate this video and part 2!! Thank you so much for being so open and free with your information, you have no idea how much it helps!

I've been using files to finish my blades for over 30 years. Great information Sam. May  I add one suggestion?  Attention to keeping your work flat as possible while forging will save time with the files.

Thanks Sam. Info is power👍 Glad your doing good

I know this vid is 5 years old, but this is super helpful info. Im currently in the process of building a railway track anvil, and after grinding a fair amount of material from the face, I was curious about how flat I could really get it.
Im not gonna go to the extreme of hand lapping it because realistically, it doesn't need to be that flat. But the filing techniques will come in super handy and ill work through the grits with a solid block and sandpaper.
It'll be a long and tedious job but im sure ill be happy with the outcome.

Solid video mate, great info, great explanations and getting the audience to understand the basics 🤙🏼

I hesitantly clicked on a 28 minute video on attaining flatness,
But I commend you sir on your skills and presentation.
That flew by as I was interested the whole way through.
I am subscribed, and look forward to checking out whatever else you have to teach.

a master gun maker used to teach classes.  to get in he sent you cube of metal you task make a 1" flat sided cube SQUARE with a hand file.

Thank you for this video. I enjoyed it very much and found it very informative.

Very informative video , thank you. Also good to see wood planes resting on their sides-as they should be !

Great demonstration Sam! Information like this helps makers more than you would think! Forge on!!

This is incredible, I got very close but I did not understand where to go after draw filing
