Live Aid was a benefit concert to raise money for famine relief in Ethiopia. This concert in Wembley in London was in front of 75,000 people and at the same time there was a concert at JFK stadium in Philly in front of 90,000 people. Both stadiums had big screens so that they could watch the other acts at the other stadium. This was broadcast over 13 satellites (the Olympics only used 3) to 150 countries with a global reach of 1.9 Billion people. There were 75 acts between the 2 stadiums. Each band had 20 minutes to perform. Many bands didn’t even practice given it was for charity and only 20 minutes. Queen practiced for 3 days. They wanted to give a mini concert and fit as many of their hits in 20 minutes as they could. Freddie had a throat infection and was told by his doctor not to perform or he could do damage to his voice. According to an interview by Brian May and in a documentary Queen did not agree to perform until after all tickets were sold so they were a bit nervous because this was not a Queen crowd. They weren’t sure if Freddie would do his call and response (known now as the Note Heard Around the World) because of this. Freddie was going to make that decision when he felt out the crowd. Queen’s performance is considered by many to be the best live performance ever. The other bands backstage fell silent and watched and knew Queen was stealing the show. They were considered past their prime by many at this point but for weeks after this concert record stores in London couldn’t keep their albums in stock. One of their sound engineers was working sound in the tent you see in the crowd and he turned up the limiters when no one was watching to make Queen louder than everyone else. The sound was so bad on stage that the band members could not hear each other or themselves. Luckily they practiced and went by body signals and memory. That is why you see them around Roger so much. Roger kept them to within a few seconds of their time which is very hard to do performing 1 live song much less 7. The stage was a revolving stage and pie shaped so there would be one act performing, one act tearing down and one act setting up. Amazing concept.

The song "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" is a Queen song specifically written as a tribute to Elvis.

The shortest 20 minutes in history that rocked the world.

They had twenty minutes. Perfect performance.

Freddie had a bad throat and had been advised not to appear - then he produced this performance. The GOAT.

Tragic thing was Freddie died 6years later.  Each member of the band wrote a number 1 song. Definitely one of the greatest bands of all time

Crazy little thing called love was written in the bath by Freddie as a tribute to Elvis Presley after Elvis's death.

Crazy Little Thing Called Love was written by Freddie in about 10 minutes, it was his tribute to Elvis!

Roger Taylor/drummer as in this show & others was backing Freddie vocally. Yes" Crazy Little Thing Called Love was written by Freddie as a tribute to Elvis.

Freddie wrote "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" as a tribute to Elvis Presley.

Freddie Mercury had a bronchial infection during this concert, which makes their performance even more amazing.

Did you notice that Brian uses 3 different guitars during Crazy Little Thing Called Love? He was ever the perfectionist. Set list is: Bohemian Rhapsody, Radio Gaga, Call and Response, Hammer to Fall, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, We Will Rock You, We Are The Champions. Later that evening Brian and Freddie came back and did Is This the World We Created.

Love watching people who did not expect 'We Will Rock You' and 'We Are The Champions'
