Almost a year in the making this latest project from Oto-san at Daddy Motorworks has truly blown me away.
Requested by a customer of his, the idea was to create a bespoke engine swapped NA Roadster that stayed true to its original balance, drivability and purity.
I can safely say they’ve achieved that to a degree that I could never expect. The Ferramiata as its called takes the unsuspecting Mazda Roadster base and enhances it with some Italian power, a Ferrari 3.6 liter V8 borrowed from the 360 Modena and shoehorned into the NA1’s chassis.
400 hp of naturally aspirated fury in a package just a smother over a metric tonne. It’s as wild as it sounds and I got first dibs on it, driving it the day after the car was legalised and plated in Japan!
Hit play and find out all the intricacies that make this one of the best and meticulously executed engine transplant Daddy Motorwoks has executed to date!

A couple of notes of additional gratitude to people who made this possible:
- BuiltbyJeff and his Ferrari powered Alfa Junior who laid the groundwork
- 3D Scanning by Mr. P who “borrowed” an ARTEC scanner for a few hours
- The exhaust header was designed by a few different people and fabricated by Scarbo Performance
- The diff is an OS Giken LSD with uprated driveshaft shop axles
- Tires were purposely kept on the less grippy compound side to try and preserve the drivetrain
- The NA front end conversion was done by Toy Garage Pupa near Fukuoka
- The power steering pump is electro-hydraulic from the Toyota MR-S
- Both the oil tank and the P/S pump have hardlines to the front to keep pressure
- Brakes are the Supermiata Big Brake Kit, great feel, low weight
- Suspension is the Supermiata XIDA XL, optimized for more stroke
- The cam covers are from a Ferrari 355, both engines are five valve heads
- The bonnet was chosen mainly to clear the intake stacks
- The exhaust is from a Ferrari F430, dented and small enough to fit
- The framerails and butterfly brace is from FlyinMiata
- Fender braces are from PACO Motorsport
- Rear Diff brace is from FlyinMiata
- Weight of the car is 1150kg
- Four years of countless more details... the reward were the friends made along the way.
Comparison (Dynapack Hub Measurements)
- Stock NB VVT 1.8 (BP-VE): 130.1 whp / 110.7 lb-ft
- Ferramiata (20 mm stacks): 338.5 whp / 232.4 lb-ft
Difference
- 🚀 2.6× more wheel horsepower
- 💪 2.1× more wheel torque
Powerband
- Peak torque moved from 5,453 rpm → 7,098 rpm (110.7 → 232.4 lb-ft)
- Peak power moved from 7,232 rpm → 8,347 rpm (130.1 → 338.5 whp)
