The easiest way to get away with any disaster in this country is to blame it on a dead man! The dead don't answer, and you can pin all the calamities on him without a care in the world. That's exactly what Sameh Fahmy, the former Minister of Petroleum, did when he confidently declared his innocence in the biggest economic catastrophe in our modern history: selling gas to Israel for a pittance!
Sameh Fahmy comes out and tells us, quite simply: "It's not my fault, Mubarak ordered the sale of the gas!" Well, Your Excellency, if these were disastrous orders that squandered the country's wealth and supported the Israeli economy, why didn't you tear up the contracts? Why didn't you resign and say you wouldn't participate in this farce? The answer is simple: because the position was more valuable. The "I'm just following orders" excuse is worse than the crime itself, and any minister who carries out orders that are ruining the country is a full partner in the crime. The truly painful irony is that the architect of this deal is on television trying to whitewash his reputation and play the victim, at the very moment when the average Egyptian citizen is sitting in darkness because of power cuts, and paying half their salary in bills under the pretext that "the state has no gas!"
