The NHL is loaded with rebuilding teams that have accumulated incredible young talent — but which one is actually closest to winning a Stanley Cup?
The Montreal Canadiens, Utah Mammoth, Buffalo Sabres, San Jose Sharks, Anaheim Ducks and Chicago Blackhawks have all taken very different approaches to building their future.
But having elite prospects isn't enough.
In this video, I break down all six rebuilds and look at what really matters when trying to build a Stanley Cup contender: superstar talent, roster depth, defence, goaltending, prospect pipelines, contracts, cap flexibility and — most importantly — whether that young talent has started translating into winning NHL games.
From Macklin Celebrini and the Sharks' incredible prospect depth, to Connor Bedard and Chicago's developing core, Ivan Demidov and Montreal's emerging powerhouse, Utah's rapidly improving young roster, Buffalo's seemingly endless potential and Anaheim's fascinating offseason decisions — these teams are all at very different stages of their rebuilds.
Some are still developing.
Some are ready to take the next step.
If you had to pick ONE of these teams to win the Stanley Cup first, who are you taking?

As for best chances for rebuilding teams to win the cup, I agree with Montreal being at the top. I think Buffalo # 2, but the questions around the Sabres' history is valid. Then #3 Utah. I do believe that the Mammoth's future looks bright and expect them to have a good season this year too.
Are the Sharks ahead of the Ducks? I really hope to see the Sharks leapfrog the Ducks (and Kings) this year in the standings. As always, I am cautiously optimistic.
I don't see the Canucks listed but they are last for me.
