Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's stage builder is very powerful, but for me, to this day nothing beats the pick-up-and-play nature of Brawl's. Today let's take a look back at how it worked, and just how I lost so many hours to it over the years. In tier list format because internet.

Thanks for watching everyone! I've been wanting to make this one for awhile, Brawl's stage builder was part of my personality back in the day lol. Let me know what you thought!

In terms of side-content, I think Brawl did it the best. And this applies more than just the stage builder, but the challenges (lot to collect from CDs to Stage Builder Parts to stages), "milestones" (which unlocks things like Extra Rules) or even collectables (like CDs or Trophies from Mew and Celebi) peaked in Brawl. Smash 4 and especially Ultimate has a lot less to collect

One point in favor of conveyor belts is that if you're trying to complete the game you eventually need to get all stickers, and conveyors are some of the best tools for making sticker farms.

Shout out to the Brawl code that lest you use unlimited parts and make them overlap. Whoever made that is the MVP

Brawl Machinimas back in the day just would not have been the same without the stage builder, even just looking at a custom stage in Brawl brings me back to those times lol

The most fun i ever had with smash was with a custom map my friends dubbed the 'box of death'. A giant box as big as it let us make, with a single block missing at the top middle. Dying laughing getting to like 400% trying to knock each other out of the box through that little hole was peak smash bros

Ultimate's stage builder is the best in terms of how creative you can be when making a stage. You can make some of the wackiest hazards, and if you're a good enough artist, you can make some really pretty looking stages. But Brawl's stage builder is the best in terms of how easy and intuitive it is to use. You don't have to worry about drawing the terrain correctly, you can just drag and drop objects super easily, and the soft platforms actually work. If stage builder comes back for Smash 6, I'd like it to be a more fleshed out version of Brawl's. Maybe they can make it work it like Mario Maker, that feels like a nice middle ground to me.

Mockrock analyzing every character’s back air: hmm well it looks like bayonetta’s starts one frame more than the hitbox would indicate thats…. Not perfect

Honestly many times I’ve wished for a straight up Super Mario Maker system for stage builder. A good balance between drawing a stage and placing blocks.
I still prefer Ultimate’s background/foreground layers, and how they handled the stage themes.

Ultimate's stage building tools always felt like a discombobulated mess a dude in his 30's doesn't wanna deal with and so accumulates in his closet.

Brawl on the other hand was a kid's lego box. Imaginative and full of petential while still being orderly and practical

You just unlocked a core memory of me spending dozens of hours in Brawl messing around in this mode. Thank you.

I remember that in all three stage builders, I would have this weird obsession with doing stupid remixes of Battlefield. A small Battlefield before Small Battlefield was born, the concept of Big Battlefield pushed to its logical extreme, a more literal interpretation of Big Battlefield, four Battlefields in various formations, a Battlefield where each of the platforms are mini Battlefields, an upside-down Battlefield, two Battlefields that take turns using the same three platforms... I don't know what I found so entertaining in that, but half of the stages I built across Brawl, 4, and Ultimate followed this motif, and I wouldn't even bother with theming for most of them.

And imagine how much this obsession ramped up when Ultimate allowed me to fill the background and foreground with even more Battlefields.

7:30 ok this was a really good bit

I was SO ANNOYED when the Ultimate stage builder would not allow copy, paste, or mirroring of objects. Come on!!!

Completely glossed over this upon my first watch, but upon rewatching this 5 months later, it hit me. At 4:55, the stage you showed off, I had a fairly clear memory of a stage similar to that in one of Brawl's 3 base stage builder stages, one for every size. I even remember the little description saying something along the lines of "Do a Meteor Smash!", sure enough, I looked it up and found it, and that's where you likely remember it from too. It's known as "Sample S: Hole". If somehow you haven't been told this since, there ya go ^^

I just thought this would be like the Final Destination video, so when the tier list popped on screen i literally burst out laughing

@MrGameguyC 1 year ago

Good video as always.
The aesthetic really brings me back to those Brawl Machinimas. (Anyone remember that Team one with Bowser getting trapped in the Drop-Block prison?)

I love the idea of doing Brawl content from time to time. Maybe even a Subspace Emissary enemy tier list at some point? Brawl is the non-current Smash game that I revisit the most, so it'd be cool to see more!
