How to Grow Crown Chrysanthemums
Celestial chrysanthemums, also known as chrysanthemum greens or peacock chrysanthemums, are a member of the Asteraceae family native to Europe. They are a leafy vegetable that thrives in cool climates.
Their name comes from their resemblance to chrysanthemums, and they bloom beautifully in the spring.
The best times to grow crown chrysanthemums are spring and fall, with spring sowing occurring between March and May and fall sowing occurring between September and November. Harvesting takes approximately two months from sowing.
Because crown chrysanthemums tend to bolt in low temperatures, spring-sown varieties should be pulled out, while fall-sown varieties can be harvested by pinching off the side shoots, allowing for harvesting until early spring.
They have a distinctive fragrance and are rich in vitamins such as vitamin B2, vitamin C, and carotene, as well as minerals such as calcium and potassium.
Typical dishes include hot pots, sesame dressing, boiled greens, and miso soup.
If you don't like the strong, distinctive scent, it's best to harvest them when they're young.

The short harvest period and minimal maintenance make this a recommended vegetable for beginners to grow with confidence.

How to Choose a Variety
Cherry blossom varieties can be broadly divided into large-leaf and medium-leaf varieties.
In the Kansai region, large-leaf varieties, known as kikunai, are cultivated, and many varieties are harvested by the head.
In the Kanto region, medium-leaf varieties are more prevalent, and many varieties are harvested by hand.
There are no differences in cultivation methods or ease of growing between the two, and all varieties are relatively easy to grow.
Choose your favorite variety based on your intended use.

Container and Soil Preparation
Use a container size of at least 45cm.
If planting a single plant, a medium-sized pot (size 8 or larger) can also be used.
Depending on the variety, the spacing between plants is about 15cm, so one small container can accommodate 3-4 plants.
Commercially available potting soil eliminates the need for soil preparation and is very convenient; you can use it right out of the bag.
If you're mixing your own soil, use a mixture of 7 parts Akadama soil, 2 parts leaf mold, and 1 part vermiculite.
Add 10-20g of dolomitic lime and 10-20g of regular compound fertilizer per 10 liters of soil, and mix thoroughly.
To improve drainage, add a few centimeters of Akadama soil or gravel to the bottom of the container or flowerpot.

Soil Preparation for Outdoor Cultivation
Start preparing the soil for outdoor cultivation two weeks before sowing seeds or planting seedlings.
The soil acidity should be between pH 6 and 6.5. Spread 100g of dolomitic lime per 1m² and till carefully to mix it throughout the soil.
One week before planting, spread 1kg of compost and 100g of regular compound fertilizer per 1m² over the entire field, lightly till the soil, and then make ridges.
Make flat ridges 30-60cm wide and 5-10cm high.
