I’m a dark skinned sister who took a solo trip to Punta Cana in 2016.  I was struggling with major depression after the death of my brother.  It never dawned on me that I would experience the blatant racism that I experienced from the very first night I landed there.
I stayed at what I thought was an upscale all inclusive resort with my own pool or what they called a swim out room just so I didn’t have to share space with anyone if I didn’t feel up to it.

My first night I reserved a table in one of the restaurants.  I walked up to the hostess podium.  The hostess looked up at me but said nothing.  I told her I had a reservation and she walked away still saying nothing to me or even acknowledging me.  
I was shocked!  A white couple walked in and lined up behind me.  She came back to the podium, said good evening to them and proceeded to seat them.

That was the beginning of the worst travel experience I have ever had.  Each day things got progressively worse.
One kind staff member apologized for the bad treatment and told me I was having problems because I looked Haitian.

I felt totally robbed!  I paid $5000+ for a week to be mistreated and ignored.  NEVER AGAIN!😡😡😡

Its so sad that as a black person other people are so obsessed with harrassing us

i am black but im light skinned with light eyes and can pass for several different ethnic groups. my first time in the dominican republic was an eye opener. the men figured i was dominican for sure and when i told them i was a black canadian not black dominican they were in shock that i considered myself black and offended that i considered them black. where i come from if you are of black heritage of any percentage you are black.  a few days later i went on an excursion and the tour guide went on a helluva rant. he explained the whole racial history of the dominican republic and strongly renounced dominicans tendency to deny their afro heritage. he then went off on samy sosa and his "transformation" lol. i will never forget that tour guide he was awesome and i thank him for educating us that day

As a Black person, I have no desire to travel to and spend money in any nation that does not accept us. I was unaware of the pervasive bigotry against Haitians and other Black people when I traveled to the Dominican Republic a few years ago. I didn't go back. Why you would choose to travel to those nations as a Black person has always baffled me.

Exactly, Belgium goes under the radar.   For example, many people are familiar with the Rwanda g-cide in 1994 between the Tutsis and Hutus.  But people never mention the part Belgium played in that tragedy.  The Belgian colonizers, for some reason, favored and elevated the Tutsis over the Hutus, which caused resentment from the Hutus.  The resentment came to a boiling point in 1994.

My former Canadian student mysteriously died at a university dorm in Poland. Manny was Indian-Canadian, wore a turban and was excited to be in med school. A few months into his first semester, he "fell" out of his dorm window. Rest in peace, Manny 🍁

I faced scrutiny in Germany.  Full disclosure, the only time I ever visit Europe is when my employer sends me to perform a system deployment.  Aside from that, I would never spend my own money or time visiting any Western country.

When I faced scrutiny, I curtly told the official that I am here on business.  I wanted to follow up with, "and if I finish early, I will be on the first flight out!"  But I didn't.  As my coach always told me, "show some class son."

I love you guys for being so real and authentic, no sugar coating.

I love traveling in Asia as a black man, except S. Korea. Everywhere else I've been in Asia, I was welcomed and treated like an honored guest. When I was in the service, I wasn't stationed in Korea but I spent 4 months TDY there. To say I felt unwelcome is a massive understatement. The crystalizing experience was trying to catch a cab in Seoul. After literally a dozen of empty cabs bypassed me, one guy stopped, rolled down his window, screamed "NO!", spat at me and sped off.

I've also spent several months in Israel for work (and I've toured the country to include Palestinian areas). As a black American person you get 2 experiences. If they don't know you're American, you get suspicion and hostility, especially if they think you're Ethiopian or Somali. The moment you speak and they hear that American accent, it's a complete 180. Suddenly, you're a long lost friend and you get red carpet treatment. I've had so many restaurants and places of business turn their nose up at the sight of me, and then I speak and they change their tune.

Bruh being black is just something else, you can even experience hostility in AFRICAN countries. I went to Rwanda with my white partner and it was like I wore the cloak of invisibility 😭, like girl I’m tired

Yes I agreed totally about Belgium!!! I was refused at several stores & a restaurant a few years back!! I also experienced racism in Barcelona!! Love your content & thank you for sharing!

To be fair, that issue with Dominicans and Haitians also exists in Puerto Rico with Dominicans (and not so much with Haitians) and Cubans.

There is colorism and racism involved, but this is not JUST racism and colorism. Instead this is the never-ending story of how minorities get blamed for everything wrong in a country and how large number of economic immigrants fleeing poverty in another country are so often unwelcomed. Happens with Venezuelans in Brazil, Mexicans in the USA, Hmong and Karens in Thailand, North Africans in France, etc.

Went to Germany and was walking close to the big train station in Frankfurt.  Randomly a police van stopped, police came out and asked me for my passport.    Like a freaking movie!  I gave them my military ID and he looked so disappointed!   Gave me back my id and they disappeared.

I have Lived in South Korea for many years. I mostly felt "comfortable," in quotations because, to be honest, no Black traveler should go to any foreign country without some suspicion that there will be a reaction to them based on race, unfortunately.  So the "comfort" basically meant there were definitely multiple incidents of racial discrimination and racial animosity, and also interest, attention and "admiration" which was more in a fetish type of way, but I never felt in danger or an overwhelming feeling of being unwanted.  Black people there are treated differently because we are foreigners, and foremost because we are Black, so it's double layered.  Bars would explicitly bar "Africans" from entrance but allow White South Africans without issue.  I navigated it fine and overall I really enjoyed my stay in South Korea.  I have really tough skin and am very comfortable moving through the world solo, so I could have stayed there forever in a bubble and navigated it just find and been pretty happy.  But I just felt like I owed myself more so I returned to the States, met my Black fiance who is as avid of a traveler as I am, and hopefully by the time we retire we find a country where we don't have to always worry if an incident was brought about simply because of the color of our skin.  The search continues....

Its a shame theres not too many places we can go even "home". Ghana  and the phillipines look so far to be the internets most welcoming of us through and through.
