The Valeyard shows the Doctor has evil in his heart.
Professor Yana shows the Master has good in his heart.

It is a crime that Derek Jacobi never got at least two or three episodes as The Master. He would have been amazing.

This could have all been avoided if she said "can I show that to the doctor, he's interested in antiques" instead of leaving him alone with it....

2:55 "the drums, the drums the never ending drumbeat, open me you human fool, open the light and summon me and receive my majesty"

Jacobi acting: peerless. notice how once he gets the clue- no more Mister Nice Guy. His personality already shifts. Beautiful to watch.

I love the part at about 2:30 You get the sense that the Doctor knows who it would have to be. That there's only one other TimeLord that might still be alive

2:55 imagine being a classic who fan as the revival is airing and hearing those voices and knowing exactly who this is just based on that, must’ve been incredible

"You escape the Time War, then it's the perfect place to hide. The End of the Universe!"

Yeah, Gallifrey thought so as well.

One of the best cliff hangers of the show. Series 1-3 saw The Doctor as the only Time Lord left in the universe, the 9th Doctor even saying he could feel if there were any others. Then came the face of Boe's prediction and everyone was coming up with theories, excited to see what Boe meant. Then after we see the human Yana spend almost the entire episode helping people and being a gentle and kind character who suddenly talks about his fob watch... It's the Master!

Definitely TV gold!

It is a testament to Jacobi's acting ability that he can swap from kindly old man to evil alien criminal in less than a second. It is two COMPLETELY different performances and it is BRILLIANT! I really wish we had seen more of him on screen, though his audios are great.

This guy scared me more than any incarnation besides Delgado. He was terrifying without even having to raise his voice. That is the sign of a magnificent villain. Quiet is always scarier than loud and the best master's (Delgado, Jacobi, and Missy) understood this.

3:43 From the look on the Doctor's face, it's almost as if he can feel the fob watch being opened, and as he remembers the Face of Boe's final words, it finally becomes clear to him. "You Are Not Alone" wasn't just a message, it was a warning. A warning, because there's only one other Time Lord that could've possibly survived the Time War, and he's been hidden in plain sight all this time.

Genuine chills.

"What is it the Face of Boe said??"

Ask him, he's right behind you!

You had to be there in 2007 to know what this reveal was like.
“Yana Is The Master!”

If only doctor who was like this now. Imagine how good Capaldi would be with a story like this! I miss the times when the soundtrack sent shivers down my spine.

Derek Jacobi would have been a terrific Classic Series Master.

" The Doctor is never more dangerous than when the odds are against him."
The Master in : 'The Deadly Assassin' October 1976 =))

3:44 I just realized the reason why the doctor froze, he's sensing the regeneration energy being released, he's not just mesmerized by the spaceship's launch or remembering the face of boe's last words, he's literally feeling another time lord's presence

3:19 “You escape the Time War and it’s the perfect place to hide, the end of the universe” Jack is literally smarter than Rassilon

@xMrDavid2112x 11 years ago

Russell T Davies said in the commentary for this episode that everything that happens in this episode is pretty much in service of pulling off the twist ending. For example: The only reason why 10 and Jack have to fix the engine is so that Yana and the Doctor are separated. It makes you realize how committed Davies was to getting this reveal right.
That's something you don't really get with Moffat. He prefers to show you one card from his hand and then ask you to guess the rest of his cards. It's a different style and I even though I enjoy it, I can't help but miss the dramatic flourish of the Davies era.

The Master is hands down my favorite Doctor Who villain ever. Because he is probably the scariest and most threatening to me. Also the theme song itself is just has my heart going fast.
