We begin our hike at the Bürglalm, which we reach by car via a forest road. From here, we have about 700 meters of elevation gain to the 2,363-meter summit. So you'll need a bit of stamina, but the trail is initially quite pleasant.
Even in the morning, the landscape reveals its most beautiful side: soft morning light, blooming heather, the first snow-capped peaks on the horizon, and plenty of wildlife encounters. We walk past cows and horses and later even spot marmots and a whole group of rather tame goats.
The narrow path winds its way upwards along the grassy slopes. Keep a close eye on the trail markers, as the path is sometimes faint. You'll find the exact GPS track of our tour in the HOME of TRAVEL app.
The higher we climb, the more impressive the view becomes. More and more three-thousand-meter peaks appear on the horizon, and the path gradually becomes steeper. At one point, even footholds assist the ascent before we finally reach the ridge.
From here, the character of the tour changes significantly: Suddenly, the seemingly gentle grassy mountain appears much more rugged. We follow the ridge towards the summit cross, walking what feels like a sea of mountains.
Then we've made it: 2,363 meters, summit of the Geißstein! 😍
A fantastic panoramic view awaits us at the top. We can see, among others, the Wilder Kaiser, the Loferer and Leoganger Steinberge, the Watzmann, the Hohe Tauern, the Kitzsteinhorn, the Großglockner, and, with a bit of luck, even the Großvenediger. The Zillertal Alps, the Kitzbühel Alps, and even the Stubai Alps are also visible.
However, we can't remain completely relaxed, as thunderstorms are forecast for later. Therefore, we start our descent in good time. And this section is quite challenging: The path narrows, drops steeply away on both sides, and suddenly sure-footedness and a head for heights are essential. If you don't feel up to this section, you can simply return via our ascent route.
After the more demanding ridge section, the hike becomes significantly more relaxed. We pass the Sintersbacher Hochalm and take one last look back at the summit and our route so far before heading leisurely back towards the Bürglalm.
And of course, a stop for refreshments is a must at the end of such a tour. We enjoy freshly made Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancake). The perfect end to this beautiful circular hike.
And if you'd like to discover another beautiful mountain lake in the region afterward, be sure to check out our video about the Seebachsee.
Enjoy watching and hiking along! 👋⛰️
