Syntell and Rekkai are watching a Cheech & Chong film for the first time — and they went straight to the one that started it all. Up in Smoke (1978) is on the Mount Rushmore of stoner comedies, and there's a reason: a van made entirely of weed, dog-mixed joints, a cop who keeps pissing on his own leg, and a concert finale that accidentally hot-boxes an entire venue. Rekkai's canon is Half Baked and How High. This one predates all of it.

Plus — neither host knew Tommy Chong was half-Chinese until about 20 minutes in. Today years old.

Up in Smoke is not on the Mt. Rushmore of stoner movies....It is the sky which the Mt Rushmore of stoner movies lives under.

I grew up on Cheech and Chong. My parents were what people would call “hippies.” Although, hippies didn’t really call themselves that, they usually called each other freaks or heads, etc. We had no filters as kids, so we listened to Carlin, Pryor, Murphy, Cheech and Chong, and everything in between. I can give you a breakdown on this.

So, this came out in 1978, but a lot of it is based on their comedy album in 1971. My dad was in his early 20’s. Back in the day, you would buy records, not just music, but comedy records. It wasn’t just stand up but sketches, too. Cheech and Chong records became wildly popular with the freaks and stoners. I think they had four or five records out before they were on film or TV. Needless to say, it was an explosion because there wasn’t anything like this. There wasn’t a lot of real raw drug use displayed so openly on TV. Not in a funny way.

Growing up Gen X, most working class parents who partied had Cheech & Chong records. The cool ones would let us play them even though we were in grade school. Back before the internet or even cable TV, the best comedy was on vinyl. Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner released their '1,000 Year Old Man' record in 1960. In the 70's, comedy records exploded. Cheech & Chong, Rap Reiplinger (Hawaiian comic) and National Lampoon released comedy sketch albums, while George Carlin, Richard Pryor and Steve Martin released highly successful live stand up albums. Much of C&C's appeal is nostalgic, but a lot of their old comedy albums as well as their movies hold up. Nice Dreams is literally a utopian fantasy for cannabis lovers. After not really getting it when I first saw it, I now consider it an underrated gem, but you really have to pay close attention to get the jokes, which are concealed but clever. Fun reaction, guys!

Fun fact: During the time this movie came out, weed had been decrimiinalized in California. If you had less than an ounce on you, the most you'd get was a $50 fine. Seriously. CA was the first state in the nation to do that, but nobody remembers it anymore. I remember going to pot rallies back then, where people would get together and smoke weed right out in the open. (The cops didn't care so long as we behaved ourselves, as they had better things to do than bother with us.) The 70's, man. We were all set to make weed legal federally, but then Reagan came along and crapped it all up, the killjoy.

Fun fact: Most of this movie was ad libbed, and made up on the spot. This movie had me laughing so hard, it's a classic.

In the beginning when Chong’s dad picks up his pants and goes “Son of a b****”! My dad use to do that lol it reminds me of him 😂

Think about us that grew listening to records in junior high school and then seeing this movie in high school and then Cheech is doing a TV show playing a straight cop with Don Johnson. It was like what!!😂
