When I was a kid and teen in the early 2000's living in rural north Texas everyone used to say " The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" was based off a guy locked up in our local criminal insane asylum. It wasn't true but it is funny how stuff like that spread so easily. It wasn't as known to just google debunk something real quick back then, but lies spread faster with the internet too so I guess it goes both ways.

The Final Destination series (SPOILERS BELOW) is definitely supernatural but a lot of the scenes and plot are based at least slightly off of real life events.

Jeffrey Reddick initially created the script for X Files. He read a story about a woman who went on vacation. Her mother called her and told her not to take the flight the next day because she had a terrible feeling about it. The woman switched flights and the plane she would have been on fatally crashed.

In addition, a lot of the deaths are based off real world occurences. Final Destination 4’s opening premonition is based off the Le Mans racing disaster of 1955. Hunt Wynorski’s death in the same film (having been disemboweled by a high pressure pool drain) actually happened.

Scooby Doo did an episode similar to Nightmare on Elm Street, Scooby Doo Mystery incorporated season 2, episode 1. The adults where being hunted by "The dreamweaver", it's a fun episode I watched as a kid and never knew it was basied on anything!

My mom read the book before the film came out, and decided that
the Lutzes were full of crap; she believed it was a con from the start.

The Cambodian and Hmong death syndrome is medically known as Sudden Unexpected Nocturnal Death Syndrome (SUNDS). It describes a mysterious medical phenomenon that caused otherwise healthy young Southeast Asian refugees—primarily Hmong men from Laos and Cambodian Kampuchean (re: Pol Pot, genocide) men—to die suddenly in their sleep during the late 1970s and 1980s. Oh, yeah...part two please.
