Building a house on a sand dune makes no sense. Same as building on flood plains.

Injustice? It's costal erosion.

The East Coast has been eroding constantly for thousands of years. There are entire mediaeval towns that are now hundreds of meters out from the shoreline under water.

When buying a coastal house, you aren't buying the land, you're buying time.

I don't want to sound callous, but why would you buy another house by the sea after losing the first one? 🤦

On the Delfland Coast in Netherlands instead of blocking erosion with sea defence walls (which shifts the problem) they dumped sand in a single, large-scale intervention to the entire coastal system. This allowed  currents to redistribute it and stabilised adjacent areas rather than causing further erosion. Apparently this approach has been working successfully for over 10 years without the need for annual maintenance....

A lot of people here gambled they'd be gone before their house but the sea beat them to it.

It's a sad fact of living on sand right by the sea. How fast the erosion has occurred is scary.
Such a shame their homes couldn't have been moved further in land so at least they would still have had their much loved homes. I mean to have to then buy another plot of land would be too much. A shame there's been no help. 😢

Planning permission should never have been given.

I would buy a caravan by the sea and just keep rolling it back with the tide. Still feel for them though. They were missold.

The houses are glorified sheds, all timber frames because they knew they would be gone one day. The risk of loosing your house was a known one.

In the end the sea always wins

Most people forget that the houses at risk on the coast of Hemsby were only ever granted planning permission on the basis they were holidays homes, not to be lived in full time.
It was well known this would be an issue when they were put up in the first place

As Dr Day commented, coastal erosion has been in effect for thousands of years, to which these communities are aware. Most of the properties are temporary, timber-framed, and of non standard construction - possibly un-mortgageable - meant to be inhabited as holiday homes, as opposed to permanent dwellings. Whilst I am deeply saddened for these people, I am not sure it is somewhere, with hindsight and research, I could ever wish to live due to its traumatic history. I do hope all residents have alternative provision and my thoughts are with them all.

Heartbreaking to watch. I've been filming in Hemsby for the past two years and the changes are shocking I've seen so many more homes demolished in that short time alone. This documentary captures the relentless reality so well. Thoughts are with everyone losing their homes and memories to the sea. Something needs to change, but it's a huge challenge.

The old 80yr old lady, Glenda, claimed "nobody seems to care". I think ppl care and feel bad, as I do as well, but it seems like most ppl are having dealing with their own problems as well. Esp. these days with the wars and govt. corruptions and high costs of living.
