The fact the HP movies gave Daniel Radcliffe the capacity to act for the sake of acting, not caring about paychecks, has certainly made his career very interesting to follow. He just pics characters he likes in movies he thinks are interesting and fun and the results have been very fun.

i feel like they wouldn't have shown arthur holding a blade to his neck at the start of the movie if the ending wasn't meant to be interpreted as a twisted token of gratitude from the woman in black to arthur. it's like the woman in black knew arthur really wanted to be reunited with his wife, but held on for the sake of his son. no she didn't truly forgive anyone, but she appreciated arthur's effort because he tried to help her more than anyone else ever did. so, she reunited his family tragically in death as a thank you

This was my VERY first horror movie I watched when I was around 10 years old. My mom only let me watch it because she liked Daniel Radcliffe from Harry Potter. I saw the Woman in Black in the hallway leading to my bedroom for YEARS lmao, this movie holds a special place in my heart. Also I would love for you to cover the 1989 version as well if you’re interested!

something about this film that always gets me, is the fact there’s so much detail in the background of each shot. the intentional dark sets, and cleverly placed black clothing that makes you double check you’re not looking at the woman in black - constantly keeping you on edge. so gooood

It's interesting that you mention the idea of the Woman in Black being there, but obscured. I saw a live performance in the Alhambra Theatre, Bradford, UK, and that's exactly how they did it. The lighting on stage was done in such a way that she appeared to be just a shadow, but one with a vaguely human shape. She got more and more visible until she became a effectively a main character towards the end. It was also the Daniel Radcliffe adaptation that made me want to see it live! So big success there

1:06 his movie father, the actor playing James Potter, played the very same lead role in the 80s tv adaptation.

I took the random screaming jump scares from nowhere as an homage to the stage play. In many of those productions, the scares come from random screams that emanate from different places in the theater during the play. It’s really freaky and pretty effective when you watch it and it felt like that’s what they were going for with that bit in the movie.

Nothing beats a Gothic Victorian Ghost Story™

27:57 “if I had a nickel for every time Daniel Radcliffe ended up in a fog-laden limbo in a movie, I’d have 2 nickels, which isn’t a lot, but weird that it happened twice in 2 consecutive years.”

I remember when people started realizing that Robert Pattinson isn't just the Twilight guy. This was Daniel Radcliffe's version, but it flew under the radar and it took people a while before they stopped thinking Harry Potter was all he was.

I think the main thing for me that makes this a superior ghost story (whether it's the movie, book, or play) is that nothing stops her. There are so many movies where the main characters conquer all the evil, and the ending can be wrapped up in a bow. Her grief is so angry and powerful that nothing can stop it, even though there are so many in the village who understand what the Woman in Black does. I think that really makes the story so much more compelling!

This is one of very few horror movies that genuinely scares me because of its imagery and subtle scares. And I watch heaps of horror movies

This movie along with Robert Eggers Nosferatu, is the type of gothic horror I would love seeing more of. We have had way to many movies about families moving into a hunted suburban house

My sister and I watched this on DVD when she and I were first really starting to watch horror together in 2013-14.  I shouted "You ungrateful bitch!" at the television when Arthur and Joseph were run over by the train, even though I understood what Jennet was doing for the two of them.  Also, you take one look at Eel Marsh House and you can immediately tell the place is fucking haunted lol

This movie walked so Mike Flanagan could run.

Love gothic horror - you should do crimson peak!!

The room with the toys legit was scary to me . Throw in weird antique toys and children and im pretty spooked.

Every time I watch a Woman in Black review, I feel like I've gone a bit nuts because I apparently saw a different version to everyone else. In the movie I watched, when Arthur summons Jennet to the nursery, as she charges at him, you can hear a little boy's voice yelling YOU'RE NOT MY MUMMY. Her son rejected her, ensuring that she will never, ever find any kind of peace, and the haunting is doomed to continue in perpetuity. The only reason Arthur and his son escaped the same fate as the other kids is because his wife came and rescued them. The Woman in Black wasn't showing any kindness or mercy, she was foiled.

This is (despite its faults) one of my favorite horror movies and I watch it yearly - during the daytime. Not at night. Never at night.

Here's a fun fact, The Woman in Black (1989) the character of Arthur was played by Adrian Rawlins, whoooo, played James Potter in the Harry Potter franchise
