Is it permissible to recite the Amidah while seated on a train, bus, plane, or boat? And what should one do when traveling with tefillin and fearing they might be stolen during prayer?
In this lesson, the Rabbi explains several important rules regarding the Amidah while traveling.
Normally, one should not hold anything in their hands, except perhaps their siddur. However, if one is on a train or in an airport and is concerned about their tefillin bag, they may, under certain circumstances, keep it with them in order to pray with concentration.
Similarly, when the time for Mincha arrives on a train or bus and it is difficult to stand without disturbing others or being jostled, it is permissible to recite the Amidah while seated, directing one's intention toward Jerusalem, the Temple, and the Holy of Holies.
🙏 Because beyond the posture of the body, the Rabbi reminds us of an essential principle:
"Rachmana liba ba'eh" — God desires the intentions of the heart.
👉 Can we hold something during the Amidah?
👉 What should we do with our tefillin when traveling?
👉 Can we pray sitting down on public transport?
👉 Where should we direct our intention when we cannot face Jerusalem?
