A highway signboard. Two engineers suspended. A brand-new board put up overnight.

That is how fast Tamil Nadu’s government headed by C Joseph Vijay moved the moment Hindi appeared on a highway signboard.
Why the rush? Because here, language is never just language. It is identity, history, and pride. Nearly ninety years ago, in Madras Presidency, Premier Rajaji described Hindi as “chutney on the leaf” and told people to taste it or leave it alone. Tamil Nadu chose to leave it alone.

And yet this same state welcomes lakhs of Hindi-speaking workers who help build its cities and towns and keep its businesses running.
So how do you protect one without turning your back on the other?
