Good morning, and welcome to our little corner of Japan.

This is one summer morning with my 4-month-old son, So-chan, in our 60-year-old Japanese house. While he watches me from his bouncer, I open up the house, fold away our futon, and put on my kappogi apron to cook — simmered hijiki with lotus root, homemade nametake mushrooms, vegetables pickled in dashi, and a pot of miso soup. Then we sit down at the low table for a traditional Japanese breakfast, and after that it is So-chan's turn: warm milk in his mama's arms.

Nothing special happens in this video. It is just the quiet sounds of an old house, a small kitchen, and a growing baby. I hope this little morning becomes a deep breath in your day.
