To be fair, they all laugh at him for being dumb, but the moment he was asked “What superpower would you have,” his first thought was “Would this really make me happy?” A lot of people wouldn't think that far ahead.
I'm convinced that I've nearly listened to every one of their PC's. Absolutely HAS to be the BEST podcast to ever exist to date. Its so fucking good, ill listen to the same episode I've heard 3 times already.
I think that sometimes Carl’s observations are actually on point and quite astute, but they go over Rick’s and Steve’s head, or they are just dismissed as stupid because of Carl’ simplistic delivery. For example the onion shopping list remembering story - Carl was actually onto something there - there is a fundamental difference between the conscious putting together of a shopping list and the unconscious remembering of the missing onion 5 minutes later - there is obviously a subsequent non-conscious process going on triggered by the conscious effort of putting the list together, the brain is still trying to remember what is missing even after the conscious effort is done. Carl quite rightly observed that the non-conscious brain (as a thing separate from himself - his consciousness) is helping him out and asked the question of who is the puppet and who the puppeteer. Quite deep actually.
