Belongil Beach sits on the edge of Byron Bay, one of Australia's most fashionable and expensive seaside addresses. Its erosion crisis started in the 1970s with residents burying car wrecks in the sand as makeshift protection, and fifty years later it's still working through the courts.

In this video, we look at the 1974 cyclone that wiped out an entire village here, the University of New South Wales research suggesting Belongil's erosion was partly caused by engineering built to protect a different stretch of beach entirely, and why a 2016 seawall failed its first real test within a year of being built.

Because sometimes the hardest question isn't how to stop a beach from eroding. It's figuring out who actually broke it in the first place.
