Empress Dowager Xiaozhuang: the young widow who seized the Qing throne for her 6-year-old son, outlived regent Dorgon’s rise and fall, and raised Emperor Kangxi into one of China’s most powerful rulers. What did she sacrifice to save the dynasty — and what do their tombs reveal about their secret relationship?

After Hong Taiji’s sudden death plunged the Qing Dynasty into a deadly succession crisis, the young empress dowager navigated brutal court politics to place her son Fulin (the Shunzhi Emperor) on the throne. Her key ally: Prince Dorgon, the ambitious military leader who would become the empire’s all-powerful regent — and later be condemned as a traitor, buried far from her forever.

This full documentary traces Xiaozhuang’s decades shaping Qing Dynasty history: from the tense six-day succession struggle after Hong Taiji’s death, to Dorgon’s authoritarian rule and the persistent rumors of a secret romance between them. We follow her through the heartbreak of losing her son Shunzhi, her rigorous training of her grandson Kangxi, and her pivotal role in the fall of regent Oboi that secured Kangxi’s legendary reign.

We also unpack one of imperial China’s most enduring historical mysteries: did Xiaozhuang secretly marry Dorgon? And what can the distance between their final resting places really tell us about power, loyalty, and the hidden costs of keeping a dynasty alive?
