You leave your week at the gate.
It isn't a decision. You just walk past it, the latch clicking shut behind you the way a latch does, and by the time the dirt lane bends you have stopped thinking about going back for it. Somewhere behind you there is a Tuesday with your name on it. Let it wait.
The white farmhouse sits where the lane turns. Green shutters, a little sun-tired. Roses have climbed the porch roof and nobody has ever told them where to stop, so they haven't. There is smoke coming off the chimney even now, in August, which makes no sense until you remember that a house this old cooks on a range. Something is on the stove. Something is always on the stove.
You stay right where you are. This is the spot. There isn't a better one further on.
The hydrangeas by the porch are enormous and going faintly green at the edges β that thing they do late in summer when they've decided the season is nearly finished and see no reason to be theatrical about it. The wildflower lane comes up past your knees. Black-eyed Susans, Queen Anne's lace, something purple you'd need a book to name and won't. Beyond the fence the meadow has gone the colour of weak tea, and the hills behind it are blue and far off and honestly none of your business.
Sunset birdsong first, though there isn't much of it and none of it is loud. This is the hour when the birds have mostly said what they came to say. A few keep going out of the big tree and somewhere in the hedgerow, unhurried, leaving long gaps between. You start listening into the gaps.
Then a gentle breeze through the leaves overhead. The shadows slide across the dirt lane, slow, and you watch that for longer than you'd admit.
Then β later, without announcing itself β crickets. One. A few. The whole field, taking the evening over from the birds like a shift change nobody supervises.
No music out here. Nothing swells. Nothing is building toward anything and nothing is going to resolve, and after a while your chest works out that it can stop waiting for the part where something happens.
A lamp goes on behind the shutters. You can't see who switched it. You don't need to. The window is warm now and that's the whole story.
Ten hours of this. Leave it running while you work, while you read, while the room you're actually in goes dark around you without asking permission. Your heart slows to follow the lane. That happens on its own out here, no effort required, and it will still be happening at hour eight.
Your week is at the gate.
Leave it there.
