Dhikr and the Tranquility of the Heart 1. Dhikr as a Cause of Tranquility The remembrance of Allah is from the greatest means of tranquillity and peace for the heart. → Dhikr drives Shayṭān away from the servant → Nearness to Shayṭān brings worry, fear, grief, and sadness → Shayṭān works to frighten the believers and cause them distress → He diverts people from the remembrance of Allah through whispering and insinuation
2. Shayṭān’s Whispering and Retreat Allah describes Shayṭān as al-Waswās and al-Khannās. → When a servant is heedless of dhikr, Shayṭān whispers → When Allah is remembered, Shayṭān retreats and withdraws → Dhikr expels Shayṭān and distances him from the believing servant → Neglect of dhikr invites Shayṭān to remain close as a constant companion
3. The Impact of Shayṭān on the Heart When Shayṭān settles upon the heart, severe harm follows. → The heart is filled with darkness and loneliness → The servant is led into serious deviations → Obedience to Allah becomes distant and heavy → Inner peace and tranquillity disappear Many forms of grief and anxiety affecting hearts arise due to neglecting the remembrance of Allah.
4. Tranquillity of the Believers The tranquillity found in the hearts of the believers through dhikr has clear effects. → Shayṭān is expelled from the heart → Calmness and reassurance return → The soul experiences peace and comfort Shayṭān cannot tolerate the remembrance of Allah.
5. Dhikr as a Strong Fortress The remembrance of Allah is a fortified protection for the believer. → Dhikr is a strong fortress by Allah’s permission → It protects the believer from Shayṭān → It guards against whisperings and temptations For this reason, scholars named many collections of adhkār “al-Ḥiṣn” (The Fortress).
6. The Parable of Protection Through Dhikr The one who remembers Allah is like a person fleeing from an enemy. → He enters a fortified fortress → He protects himself from harm → He remains safe from his enemies Likewise, dhikr shields the believer from Shayṭān.
7. Shayṭān’s Persistent Enmity Shayṭān’s enmity toward the believers is constant and ongoing. → He approaches from all directions → He waits for moments of heedlessness → He exploits even brief lapses in remembrance This has been likened to a hungry animal circling food, waiting for the slightest opportunity.
8. Daily Protection Through Remembrance When leaving the house and mentioning Allah: → The servant is guided → The servant is sufficed → The servant is protected When entering the home with the remembrance of Allah: → Shayṭān is prevented from entering When eating without mentioning Allah: → Shayṭān shares in the food
9. Protection in Private Spaces and Sleep When entering the bathroom with the remembrance of Allah: → A protection from Shayṭān is established When reciting Āyat al-Kursī before sleeping: → A guardian from Allah remains → Shayṭān cannot approach until morning
10. Consistency in Dhikr The believer is in constant need of maintaining remembrance. → Prescribed daily adhkār → Regular and consistent dhikr → General remembrance in all situations
Through dhikr: → The heart finds tranquillity → The soul becomes calm → Shayṭān is kept at a distance → Happiness, peace of mind, and contentment are achieved
Duʿā’ and Adhkār Mentioned 1) Seeking refuge from Shayṭān’s whispering (Sūrah al-Nās)
→ Transliteration: Allāhu lā ilāha illā Huwa al-Ḥayyul-Qayyūm. Lā ta’khudhuhu sinatun wa lā nawm. Lahu mā fis-samāwāti wa mā fil-arḍ. Man dhal-ladhī yashfaʿu ʿindahu illā bi-idhnih. Yaʿlamu mā bayna aydīhim wa mā khalfahum. Wa lā yuḥīṭūna bi-shay’in min ʿilmihī illā bimā shā’. Wasiʿa kursiyyuhus-samāwāti wal-arḍ. Wa lā ya’ūduhu ḥifẓuhumā. Wa Huwal-ʿAliyyul-ʿAẓīm.
→ English meaning: “Allah—there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they encompass nothing of His knowledge except what He wills. His Kursī extends over the heavens and the earth, and preserving them does not tire Him. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.”
