Setting up an inexperienced seafarer as captain was a cheap wager

Good morning from Jury Duty fellow fans 👋🏻

Greetings from Ireland. That was a hell off a story. When you mentioned that shipwrecked Royal Navy sailors back then had their pay stopped the day they were shipwrecked it reminded me that during W.W.2 merchant navy crew also had their pay stopped when their ship sank. So the survivors could spend weeks adrift knowing that they were effectively unemployed.

I wager things didn't turn out as intended. 😆 🤣 😂

I recently listened to “The Wager” on audiobook. Really outstanding. Scorsese is turning it into a film. 👍🏻

I like the history ones!

I like the intro. Also, "a rebellion against a more respectable rebellion." That dude clutched his pearls hard

In those days, a naval officer could purchase their rank.  As a result, many incompetent rich kids were put in charge and got their whole crew killed.

A very unhinged way of life back then.  Thanks Jiles ❤

Just watching the rough waves at the start of this story, made me sea sick!🤢 Thanks for your hard work with this tale. I always look forward to seeing the notification of This is Monsters.😊

I'm a vet, and the methods of leadership can critically make or break morale. In leadership positions, My best friend (from somehow serving our whole careers in unison) and I would announce the daily tasks and duties that needed fulfilled, rather than delegate arbitrarily, we would ask for volunteers for each requirement, and an overwhelming majority of the time, even the least desirable of them would be filled by volunteers (for whatever reason, picking to work with a friend, or just being admirable, etc). We were always considered an extremely efficient, and respected large platoon, and frankly all good friends...

I love all of ur videos but the history ones are becoming my favorite... keep up the good work

Thanks Jiles really enjoyed the historical episode ❤

Greetings from Florida USA. Very good story. Thank you Jiles.

Holy crap! What a story.

Great history lesson. It must have really sucked being in the military during that time. Oh yeah, I’m in northern Utah! 👍🇺🇸

Cracking story thanks

Wild story!

What still fascinates me is how narrowly the 1746 court martial at Spithead was scoped: they only examined the wreck on 14 May 1741, acquitted everyone for the loss, and merely reprimanded Lieutenant Baynes for not reporting land or anchoring—while the mutiny itself was never formally tried. Bulkeley and Cummins had already published their own journal justifying the southward Magellan route against Cheap’s plan for Chiloé. Do you read that silence as Admiralty pragmatism after Anson’s war, or as a quiet decision that the castaways’ survival choices were too messy to prosecute?

5:16 😂 This is hilarious
