Former Navy SEAL Andy Stumpf sits down with Max Afterburner for a raw, unfiltered conversation about what combat operations really look like from inside a SEAL Team, the missions that shaped him, and why he traded gunfights for wingsuit flights and BASE jumping off some of the most dangerous cliffs on Earth.

Andy spent 17 years in the Navy, including time at Naval Special Warfare Development Group (SEAL Team 6), deployed multiple times to Iraq and Afghanistan, was wounded in combat, and went on to set a wingsuit world record for distance. Today he hosts the Cleared Hot podcast. In this episode we get into special operations planning, the reality of close-quarters combat, what SEAL selection (BUD/S) actually filters for, leadership under fire, the mental game of extreme sports, and the transition from military life to civilian life.

The best type of ‘interview’ will come off as two knowledgeable dudes just having a solid and interesting conversation.

You wouldn’t get this result if one of them was a civilian with basically zero relatability and a stack of preconceived misconceptions about the military.

In regard to the Cirrus SF50 Safe Return feature, I work for Cirrus Aircraft within the engineering department. The proprietary Garmin software initiates an emergency landing. It takes into account the weather, fuel levels and local topography to select the closest and safest airport to make an emergency landing. There are servos within the center console that take over all flight controls, including throttle. The automatic breaking system will bring the aircraft to a complete stop upon landing. This is an Emergency feature for an incapacitated pilot, not for someone to have in-flight cocktails.

Hey Max, great podcast. Andy is tremendous. I was Sheppard 84-06, then a Viper guy until 95. I never knew about locus of control, but we had the same mantra guy. He was one of 8 I think it was that didn’t make it to T-37 solo. But he was so sure he was destined to be the greatest F-15 guy! Interesting how things stay the same in all the change! Cheers.

Howard Wasdin was a Navy Seal who took up aviation after leaving the Navy. Unfortunately, his plane crashed and he perished sometime in 2023. He has a book about his time in the seals. It was a great read. He was in the Battle of Mogadishu in 1993. Highly recommend his book. ‘Seal Team Six: Memoirs of an Elite Navy Seal Sniper’

22:31 Mike Rutledge. He initially did 6(?) years as a Seal, joined the Army and became one of the more well regarded MH-47 pilots in TF160. Unsure if he continued aviation as a civilian.
