There is a version of America that lives in people’s heads.
Gunfire everywhere.
Violence spread evenly across all fifty states.
A country where anyone can catch a stray on a random Tuesday afternoon.
That picture is wrong.
Yes, America has a higher murder rate than peer countries like Canada and Australia. That is real. But the part that gets left out is how concentrated the violence actually is.
According to John Lott’s analysis, one percent of U.S. counties account for 41 percent of all murders.
Two percent of counties account for more than half.
Now flip the map around.
Fifty-three percent of American counties record zero murders in a typical year.
Add the counties with exactly one murder, and 69 percent of American counties account for only 3 percent of murders.
That changes the whole conversation.
Because a national murder rate is an average, and averages can hide everything.
If the violence is concentrated in a small number of neighborhoods, driven by a small number of repeat offenders, then what does a national gun ban actually do?
An assault weapons ban, magazine limit, waiting period, or registry lands on the entire country — including the places where nobody is getting murdered — while doing almost nothing on the few blocks where the killing is actually happening.
That is why they never show you the map.
If you want a policy for all 340 million Americans, you need people to believe the problem belongs equally to all 340 million Americans.
But it does not.
The people carrying the weight of America’s murder problem live in a small number of neighborhoods, and the solution they keep getting offered is a restriction on their own ability to defend themselves.
That is not public safety.
That is politics.
America is not a war zone.
