That child-to-dad conversation got real....real quick.

No one believed me when I said I wanted to be a surgeon. They kept pushing me to be in Dermatology but I pushed for what I wanted and accepted the doubts of everyone in the surgery program. no one thought I would last coz they all thought I am in it coz I want my life to be a real life grey’s anatomy haha. Hahaha trust no one was also my motto when I was a resident and I ended up doing most of the work even when I was a senior resident already. Surgery is hard but I loved it so much that I told myself that no one can ever tell me that I can’t be a surgeon even when I got reprimanded and sentenced to 7days straight duty because i pissed off my senior resident and every day they were askingme if I can still take it and I just sakd yes. My resident told me on the 5th day that I can go home but I said no and finished the hell out of those 7 days and the day after I went back to the hospital for a regular work day wearing heels and a dress. My training officer wacked me in the head with a rolled magazine and laughed and told me that he thought I was gonna quit but seeing me still smiling after that and looking more fresh than most of them earned me his respect and that’s when they knew that bitch came to play and is not going anywhere. Surgery is about having the right attitude when everyone else around you doesn’t. You have to be strong and focused to keep urself intact and not forget the reason why u wanted to be a surgeon in the first place. Hardest 5 years of my life and it’s all worth it.

I was about to apply into general surgery because I really liked it and I didn't mind the personalities. However, the lifestyle really turned me off and I switched to a different specialty. I don't think I could handle waking up early everyday and being the workhorse of the hospital and not getting paid as well as some of the other more lucrative specialties. General surgeons should be clearing a million for all the shit they have to deal with

Summary: when you are happy your brain is functioning better and you will have less error because your brain actually is firing better than if you have negative mindset

What I love about your videos, is that they pertain to the medical field, but a lot of them also tend to have really great general life advice.

The truth is being any kind of Surgeon you will not have “Great” work-life balance but you can keep trying to be around as much as possible. Matter of fact any kind of job that is in high demand will more than likely require a lot of your time. How do you think all of these top successful people get to the top? This same logic can apply to an entrepreneur, lawyer, judge, politician, senator, actor, professional athlete etc. They sacrificed some things. You just have to have a partner that is willing to work with you and compromise.

Medical specialties are a much-debated topic. In my CRNA program, I've worked with anesthesiologists and some CRNAs who say they wish they had gone the surgical route instead. I personally look at the lifestyle anesthesia offers and much prefer it to the one a typical surgeon lives. I also enjoy being able to sit for short intervals during long cases and do not envy the staff standing for hours bent over the table physically working in layers of sterile garb.

I wish that when I was a medical student that I had surgical mentors who were happy. I gave up on surgery because I could barely see anyone who was a happy surgeon.

At my previous hospital, the ED docs got paid about 60 k and up more than the hospitalists. At the time the hospitalists carried huge caseloads and the ED were happy and carefree and hospitalists were miserable. Good video, nice to confirm my anecdotal observations.

Great advice Dr. Parker. I will be starting at a DO school next year, and I will definitely be taking this to heart. One of my personal goals is to have a family and be a great father and husband. I don't think I can do that if I am in a specialty with a lot of negative people! It's easy to say "I won't be like them" because part of me is still the idealist that likes to think I can accomplish anything I set my mind to, but there are certain obstacles which just make those goals unnecessarily hard such as you have described here. This is so true! If someone at work is frustrated you’ll find everybody in the room starting to be.. it’s crazy how affected we are by the people we are hanging around

Good stuff! Happiness definitely is on our part, but geez...some environments and people can wear on that. I just want to be in an environment that doesn’t drain me so much that my husband and future kids don’t dread my homecoming lol.

Rockin that beard well, Dr. Buck! Medicine seems a lot like getting married...like, you really don't know what you're buying until you're well into it. Seems like a very controlling wife, too...perfect when the infatuation is there. Then after 5 years you've seen every side, good bad and ugly...am I going to love it with greater depth of soul? Or will the path and its ups and downs reveal that it's just not who I am after all? Big, big decision based on a whole lot of faith in unknowns.
