Matt Turner has been doing Dev, sometimes with added Ops, for over a decade. His idea of "full-stack" is Linux, Kubernetes, and now Istio too. He's given several talks and workshops on Kubernetes and Istio, and is co-organiser of the Istio London meetup. A great fan of all things simple and pure, he likes simple programming languages, simple protocols, and the unix philosophy.

I (also a SW Engineer) am trying to set up a homelab for the first time and this is the only content I've seen that actually helped me conceptualize Linux networking. THANKS MATT!

3:03 bind
6:13 what is an interface
6:18 meeting between two thing, aka. network adapter
9:58 assume another type of interface
10:22 this interface doesn't have to interface the outside world
10:37 e.g. backed by another green box (a user-space program)
11:24
11:30 this interface named to tun0 - 11:35 a virtual interface, which is not backed by actual hardware, 11:39 but backed by a user-space process
11:42 a tunnel
12:41 what is a tun used for - 12:44 commonly originally used for VPN
14:12 NAT - network address translation
19:00 e1000
19:34 ethernet is just the local network
20:43 br0 - Linux bridge
28:24 interface: ovs0

Anyone who is saying that they don't understand or finds this video confusing obviously don't really appreciate the value this video brings. After they get some experience, they will find this video golden and wished they truely took the time to understand what this man is explaining. Thank you for this great content!

0:38 introduces the fundamentals of software networking and interfaces
5:42 focuses on the role of network interfaces
11:21 discusses virtual interfaces
22:49 discusses the concept of extending a network virtually using software interfaces
28:30 discusses various types of network bridges and switches
34:12 explores the uses of QEMU and KVM

@hellelo.5840 3 years ago

Thank you, the fact that the bridge and the host interface have the same name was confusing for me too, and I spent hours looking for a video explaining this until I stumbled upon your video and I am glad I am not the only one that found this confusing....I understood the concept but I had always a doubt in my mind that I couldn't dismiss until now.
some concepts needs to be said explicitly, and you did that thank you.

Useful videos. Are slides available anywhere? Any references as to books/docs to catch up on latest approaches and to get more details/perspectives on software networking?
