🎵 What is your music doing to your soul?

One of the central arguments of this lecture is that:

“I like it” is not enough to determine whether music is good.

Music enters the imagination.
It moves the passions.
It creates associations.
It can affect judgment.
And repeated pleasure can create attachments.

Fr. Ripperger proposes a higher standard:

Does this music help order the soul toward truth, virtue, beauty, and ultimately God?

Gregorian chant receives special attention because of its ability to quiet the passions and direct the intellect and heart toward prayer.

👇 Has changing what you listen to ever affected your prayer life or interior peace?

Please keep the discussion charitable.

Thank you Father. When I first heard Gregorian chant I immediately fell in love with it....now I know why.

As someone who used to listen to "death metal", "satanic heavy metal", I can't agree with Fr. Ripperger more! It started with "grunge", (90's) then progressed steadily (yet oh so subtle. . . the devil and his pomps! I now reject them, renewing my Baptismal vows). Consecrate yourself to our Blessed Mother Mary Most holy, O Ever-Virgin Most Pure, O Star of the Sea ( take this seriously though, it is not to be taken lightly). Truly, this sermon/tallk is a blessing of knowledge & wisdom! Ave Maria!

Thank you, Father Ripperger. 3x Hail Mary's for you.

Viva Cristo Rey!
Ave, Ave Ave, O Sweet Ave Maria!

As a former church organist for 60 years, playing and hearing holy hymns give me peace. In the last few months I have been listening to Gregorian chant. That is very powerful to my soul and feeling of peace.

Fr. I can't be grateful enough, I guess you are making a saint out of many of us. Please keep the good work, may the Lord always be your strength.

And this is why I switched from doing music covers of well known (NEVER Dirty/questionable but still mainstream) stuff to doing covers of Traditional Ukrainian Catholic Hymns on Ocarina. Won't get as many views but at least I'm spreading the music of the One True Faith. :) BYZANTINE RITE For The Win!

I used to go to raves 30 years ago. I think they seriously affected my soul. I struggle with discipline and mental health. Anxiety off the charts . I worry that I am doomed. I am drowning. I have poor will power and don't know how to dig myself out. Confessions, deliverance Masses... Three years and I think I'm alive thanks to people praying for me.

I'm so relieved to hear this. I studied film and media at college and IT at uni so I know how insidious an influence these information tools are. You think it's not doing any harm then when you start taking your faith seriously and you look back, you realise how long the devil has been working on Western culture. I cut television, films, video games and music out of my life almost completely. I occasionally try again but I'm quickly put off. Small doses are enough to make you realise how the filth is everywhere and how blind the average person is to it, through no fault of their own.

This priest is awesome. Listening to this Priest makes me want to go to Mass every day! Thanks Farther Ripperger!

It is disturbing how relevant this talk is to my life. I am that effeminate male who has poisoned by a world of movies, television, videogames and constant mindless music. I am almost 40 years old and just now realizing how degenerate I am. I have found the Catholic Church, but I have a long road ahead of me to get things right in my life.

23:00 blew my mind. St. Thomas is genius.

I have an ex boyfriend who listens to the lowest vilest music you can imagine. He literally walks around with headphones on to the point that his hearing is going. He is a functioning alcoholic who still thinks he’s a teenager. He’s I his 50’s! God brought me out of that relationship and has let me see the demonic activity so clearly. I’m praying for him daily. This was awesome!

I love Gregorian chant. There’s nothing like it when it comes to creating a prayerful and holy atmosphere. One caution, however, is to beware chants that have underlying subliminal New Age “feel good” messages added to them. While searching YT for Gregorian chants, I started noticing this trend and realized a need to not only be careful of music choices but also sources.

I listen to Gregorian Chants all night long during sleep to keep demons away, as much as possible any ways. I gave up rock and punk music for the most part. If we are serious about God we must remove ourselves from this world. God Bless you and yours.

When I was in agony from a bone that overgrew in my neck, I really only seemed to get relief from blasting my music with heavy base and certain songs in my car. Sadly, the older lady allowed to screech in the liturgy, would make me feel physically ill. It made me want to advocate for music change in the liturgy. Gregorian chant helped.

I love the image of Plato at the beginning. He discussed art and music in Laws, and discussed how the vulgar evaluate the merit of music and art based solely on pleasure. He admired the Egyptians tight control of all art and music, and discussed how these are channels of yoking the souls of men and women either toward the divine and virtue, or vice and degeneracy.

Pray an act of perfect contrition everyday and go to sacramental confession when necessary.

Ot: Fr. Ripperger I hope I get the blessing at the end even though I wasn't there.

This is such a good teaching to keep in one's audio library. Fr. Basil (Order of the Holy Cross)
Also has a good (3CDs) teaching on music. May God reward Father Ripperger. May God's grace echo from musicians in our Holy Catholic Church.
