I greatly enjoyed building balsa stick models as a youngster in the 1950's. It was great fun and taught patience and skills with basic hand tools. I can still remember the smell of Ambroid cement and the nitrate dope used to adhere and seal the tissue paper covering. Some of my larger models I left uncovered so I could look at their structure. Hobby shops back then smelled of balsa wood from all the kits and models hanging from the ceiling. Too bad today's kids don't get this kind of experience, just video games and other electronics. I don't build these anymore but used those skills for a lifetime of model railroading (also great fun), woodworking and wood turning (bowls). Being able to create something with your hands (kit or not) is a satisfying, creative activity. One can take pride in "I made that." If it can fly, that's even better!
