2 small points - 1) Working people got 2 weeks off in the summer, not one. Normally a set factory/office closure. 2) The £50 allowance DID include the cost of the hotel if it was abroad. Holiday brochures would quote a "V-Form" amount, which was the amount the hotel would take out of your £50. The more expensive the hotel, the less the spending money. This alone sparked the building frenzy in Spain for big, cheap, basic hotels. No hotel abroad had any frills. No shampoo, tissues or on some occasions, even soap 🤣 This lasted into the early 90s.
From Jan 1942 till Mar 1943 I was a junior clerk at Barclays Bank, West Streatham. Billy Butlin operated all his accounts at our branch, as did the business associate who introduced him to our branch manager, whose business was known as Laker Amusements. Mr Butlin visited our branch about once every 4 months, for discussions with the manager. Every time, he brought gifts for the staff. The manager and chief clerk each received a bottle of whisky, as did the chief cashier. All other staff were given a package of toilet rolls, which my mother greatly appreciated.
I was born and grew up in Clacton and we used to go to Butlins for a holiday every year and thoroughly enjoyed it and of course the bonus was that it was only 45 minutes walk from our house 🤣
This could have been a good video, if half the photographs weren't taken in America and not at Barry Island and various other places in the UK where the dialogue is taking you. AI, replace talent cheeply. 😢
This is excellent, thank you! I've always been fascinated by Butlins as, until a few decades ago, here in Australia there were no holiday camps like this. We had bush camping and caravan parks. I've also seen lovely old British films featuring these camps. There MAY be a few flaws like mispronunciations and unrelated photos but it's so interesting and informative! Those people leaving rude and nasty comments need a HOLIDAY at Butlins. 😂 AND I'm so glad they've kept the name!
Workers back then had very little choices, mainly dur to enviroment. Dad worked, Mum handled the house and maybe took in laundry. Children went to school.. and when finished Sons joined Dad's workplace.. and daughters married. Generation after generation. If given a holiday somewhere and gived freedom - most would feel a little overwealmed. Butlins gave them a holiday they did not have to really think about..Each day was filled with fun and enterainment put on for them. For so many families it was perfect regardless of the structured serup.
At 2.38 is the image of Porthcawl, marked as Barry Island. The two towns are not far apart and competed for the same tourists, but they are decidely two different places.
