Saturday mornings used to feel like magic. Before the Marvel Cinematic Universe… before modern superhero movies… Hanna-Barbera was already creating incredible superhero worlds that inspired generations of kids in the 1960s, 70s and beyond.
In this video we’re revisiting 9 forgotten Hanna-Barbera superhero shows that were way ahead of their time including classics like Space Ghost, The Herculoids, Atom Ant, Super Friends, Frankenstein Jr., Shazzan, Young Samson & Goliath, Moby Dick & Mighty Mightor, and SWAT Kats.
Many of these cartoons introduced ideas that later became staples of modern superhero storytelling:
• shared universes
• transformation sequences
• team-up heroes
• sci-fi worlds
• giant robots
• environmental storytelling
Some only lasted a single season… but their influence can still be seen in everything from Batman: The Animated Series to Star Wars, Power Rangers, Marvel movies and modern animation.
