* शुरुआत और विकास: 1857 की क्रांति के बाद अंग्रेजों ने महसूस किया कि भारतीयों को एकजुट होने से रोकना होगा। उन्होंने हिंदू-मुसलमान और विभिन्न जातियों के बीच दूरियां बढ़ाईं।
* बंगाल का विभाजन (1905): वायसराय Lord Curzon ने प्रशासनिक कारण बताकर बंगाल को हिंदू और मुस्लिम बहुल हिस्सों में बांट दिया था, जिसका मकसद राष्ट्रीय आंदोलन को कमजोर करना था।
* पृथक निर्वाचक मंडल (Separate Electorates): अंग्रेजों ने चुनावों में धर्म के आधार पर अलग वोटिंग अधिकार दिए, जिससे समाज में सांप्रदायिक दीवारें और गहरी हो गईं।
