Scientists DNA-tested the Dead Sea Scrolls—and discovered that two fragments shouldn't have been there. Most of the fragments they tested came from sheep. But two came from cows. And that made things far more complicated than we originally thought, because cattle were unlikely to have been raised in the harsh desert where the scrolls were found. So the parchment was probably made somewhere else. But, that’s not even the remarkable part. Both cowhide fragments contained passages from Jeremiah. And when researchers compared them with other Jeremiah fragments, they ran into a much bigger problem. If you are holding on to old certainties, the next few minutes are going to be very uncomfortable. The ancient copies of Jeremiah weren't all the same. So if ancient copies were different...how do we know which one became the Jeremiah in your Bible? The answer starts with two fragments scholars thought belonged together. DNA showed they didn't.The Dead Sea Scrolls were written largely on parchment.
In today’s video, we explore groundbreaking Dead Sea Scroll DNA research and what genetic analysis is revealing about the ancient biblical manuscripts discovered near Qumran. Using DNA sequencing, parchment analysis, archaeology, and textual criticism, researchers can identify which scroll fragments came from the same animals, reconstruct fragmented manuscripts, and investigate where these ancient texts may have originated.

We examine the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Book of Jeremiah, Hebrew Bible manuscripts, ancient parchment, textual variation, Second Temple Judaism, the Qumran community, the Essenes, ancient Judea, and the history of the Bible. Discover how archaeogenetics and archaeological science are transforming biblical archaeology, helping scholars compare the Masoretic Text, Septuagint traditions, and different versions of biblical scripture.

This investigation into ancient DNA, scroll fragments, Jewish history, biblical history, manuscript studies, and religious archaeology reveals the hidden story behind some of the world’s oldest surviving biblical texts—and may change how we understand the transmission of the Hebrew Bible.
