This was a very pleasant surprise considering I’m from Devon. Greetings from Dumnonia!

To understand the Romano-Britons, one must look beyond Britain: their kingdoms were cross-Channel and kept expanding.

In the “Excerpta de libris Romanorum et Francorum”, the Romans referred to are the Romano-Britons of Gaul.

By the year 500, they had military bases in Spain, the Somme and central Gaul.

Connections were maintained into the 11th century and beyond.

The Hauteville dynasty had Breton ancestry through William Iron-Arm’s mother Muriel, and Bretons served in high positions in its armies in Italy and the Balkans.

Breton saints had shrines across northern Europe, as far east as Poland.

The House of Rohan built palaces in France, Germany, Switzerland and Czechia.

The Counts of Limoges were Breton, as is the dynasty of the Prince of Monaco.

What a delightful find! Cheers, mate!

The 'wall' part of Cornwall, the 'Wal' in Wales and even the 'Wall' in Belgium's Wallonia are all from the same etymological root referring to peoples who speak a foreign tongue. The same is true for Wallachia in Romania, Gaul (France) and even Walnut (foreign nut).

Dyfnaint, single F pronounced V in modern Welsh. Makes the jump to Devon a lot more logical. Good video, thanks.

The land of Uther Pendragon!

Cadbury/Congresbury is in Somerset

Been a sub for years now and usually enjoy your work so idk if you're having a bad day, were in a hurry to get this out, or just slipping lately, but there's quite a few mistakes/assumptions in this video..

This is a great video.  I knew some of this material beforehand, but a lot of this is new to me.  Very nicely presented.

Excellent presentation - very well done. When I clicked on it I was half expecting an AI abomination, since they are getting hard to avoid!

Askeladd homeland mention! Ave Lucius Artorius Castus

Oh shit, we are SO BACK! Been a minute, Thersites.

My maternal grandfather's family came from this region. Thanks for this!

This put me in the mood for a Ben and Jerry's

Neat, I've just started Bernard Cornwall's Arthur series and this really helps me get my bearings

Hello, Theristes. I wonder if you'd be interested in adding recommended reads in your video descriptions or perhaps even make a grand post with all the books or literature that's relevant to all the videos made so far, or since that may be way too massive an endeavour perhaps you can offer some advice as to which books would be worth picking up and reading and which would not be worthwhile in regards to history?

I've actually bought Julian by Gore Vidal based on a discussion you've had on a comment thread in your video on Julian the Apostate, so I'm hunting for some more books like.

Thanks.

Respectful correction: Congresbury is in North Somerset, not Devon.

I am from Devon. My hometown, Exeter, was established by the Romans, and it was called Isca Dumnoniorum. Dumnoniorum being Dumnonia. Isca is the river, so the name means the River of the Dumnonii.
My family lived around the central part of Devon for 100s and 100s of years. My family surname Hatherley originates from Devon so my family would've been native to the area even before the Anglo Saxons

Great video. Dumnonia is a contemporary sub-Roman name used by Gildas if only in the rather ‘punny’ form of Damnonia. Most certainly not a modern scholarly name

Cool😊
