The epitome of grit and determination. I appreciate how RJ intelligently articulates his experience, insights and observations. Thanks for taking the time to interview one of the true legends in MX.

I can't believe that not one rider would allow Rick to assist them... amazing.

Ricky is a great rider, a real bad-ass , not a Muppet robot like today's riders, spoke from the heart, a real racer, great interview thankyou

RJ you are so right about just go ride. I’m 56 and after being off bike for 10 years went back to riding in the desert. It’s good for the soul finally peace. And you’re right about the sleeping good at night.

Great interview. I had my bedroom walls plastered with nothing but RJ pictures. In 1986 in Maggiora Italy I got to meet him and had a nice conversation with him.Rj is and will be my all time favorite rider.

Its been awhile, i forgot how well spoken RJ is, i really enjoy hearing his insight. Loved reading his work as well. Holy crap, never knew RJ Offering free assist to riders and no takers????? I would love to have that offer. RJ had alot of skill in his experience and I have zero doubt he could still make someone an a+ rider.

Huge RJ fan. Was gutted to learn of his accident at Gatorback (first time @ Speedweek- we were a little late the next morning).
Really appreciated his thoughts on just riding being good for the body & soul. Couldn't agree more. My riding buddies and I always say to old racers " who cares how fast you are or aren't, just ride and have FUN"🎯

RJ, all of us from Covina Yamaha thought you were a rock star in your burmies, calling out the sandbaggers that night at the Collesium🚀

Great interview! I totally agree about just going riding. I raced in So Cal back in the 70’s and early 80’s rode for a few more years then stopped. When I turned 45 I bought a 2005 CRF250X and rode for fun like another 5 yrs. Then bought a RZR and had fun with that until it hurt too much, bad neck paid! Wouldn’t change a thing, I have so many great memories! 😎🤠

I was a teenager in the 80s and growing up and racing here in the Deep South ( South Carolina) back then looking at MXA it was like RJ was from a different planet! I would marvel and wonder what those California guys were doing!!! I had him on a pedestal that was so high! So much that i quit following ( and riding ) MX for several years when Rick retired! I just couldn’t take Bradshaw and I thought he would dominate for many years!!!! Then one day in 93 I picked up a magazine and saw what MC was doing!!!! I bought a new CR a month or so later and started racing again.

I was lucky enough to attend the Yamaha training session they offered with RJ as the trainer. It was a phenomenal experience and was a time to never be duplicated again.
I can't believe any rider would turn down his offer of help . Truly unfortunate IMHO how the sport today has lost some of its heritage, in large part from the loss of AMA control/management, changes to the sanctioning body, and stupid rules that allowed such displacement advantage to the 4 strokes which was never updated to match the technology as it developed to shrink the displacement advantage to even up the HP advantage.

I idolized Rick. I was lucky enough to see him race. He influenced me and my involvement in dirt sports started by following RJ. Good times.

Last week Ryan Hughes was asked his opinion of today's announcers and said that, while James Stewart is good, for example, he would prefer someone with a more philosophical insight into the sport during live TV broadcasts.
Johnson is that announcer.

The true originator of the "scrub" was Jojo Keller back in '83. There are photos of him laying his Honda flat. Very Bubbasque before Bubba was even born, probably.
