Charette is one of the most famous Vendée generals, a key figure in the War in the Vendée, the terrible civil war that engulfed western France during the French Revolution. With his large white plume on his hat, he was "the Brigands' General," the most wanted man in France, the Republic's bête noire! For three years, he held off the revolutionary armies, commanding a pack of peasants in clogs. Napoleon saw "a spark of genius" in him. His life is both an adventure novel and a tragedy.
