Top Gun is one of the films that became a cultural phenomenonβbut the behind-the-scenes stories are just as thrilling as what happens on screen! This is my favorite movie.
Apparently, whoever looked up the FACTS on Top Gun didn't look deep enough, I saw the behind the scenes of making Top Gun and when Tony Scott asked the Admiral to turn the ship back around to get the sunset light for his shot, at FIRST, the Admiral said, "No." But then Director Tony Zcott asked him how much it would cost to get the ship turned around, (for his perfect lighting shit), and the Admiral told him, "$25,000." Tony Scott pulled out his checkbook and wrote a check for $25,000 and gave it to the Admiral, the Admiral ordered the ship turned back around, Tony Scott filmed his shot, then immediately called his bank and put a 'STOP PAYMENT' on that $25,000 check. I heard Tony Scott tell this story in that documentary. Pretty funny. π€£
In the accident scene Tom lost his helmet in that shoot. I had to quickly make him a new helmet as quickly as possible. This raised the number of helmets I made from 50 to 51 total.
I didn't know when film making sometimes during production they would stop filming to do audience testing. Somebody didn't take chances in their pursuit of a great film. It worked for this movie.
I saw the 40th Anniversary of Top Gun in the theater. I was 11 when it came out and never got to see it at the movies. It def took me back to my childhood. Still a badass movie.. And I finally got to see it on the big screen.
Alternate time line fact: What Tom did for Ray Ban Aviator sales in this movie, he also did for Ray Ban Wayfarer sales in "Risky Business" . (They owe him promotional money!π)
Such a cool film for the day, it had action, disaster, love making & rivalry all in one big package π¦. So here's to the TOPGUN team & to all friendly fire pilots who are protecting our children, family and friends, coming from Dulwich London England πβοΈ peace βοΈπ
Recruiter at the theater: "Join the Navy now and we'll have you sitting in the F-14 the day after you graduate Boot Camp! You'll be able to fly any plane you want anytime you want and they do have hot tubs!"
Nah. Recruiter is always tell you how it is they never tell you what you wanna hear to get you to join. There is the most honest professionals I know....
Fact 16: the bathroom scene after the bar song was filmed at the HQ building, Naval Recruit Training Command, San Diego, Ca. How do I know this? I cleaned it, with my fellow recruits, while attending Basic Training in the early 90s. π
NO one else could have done justice to Iceman. Kilmer became Iceman whether he liked it or not. And they did wonderful homage to Val in Maverick, using Val's recorded voice and covering his neck so you didnt know about his trach. Now that volleyball scene, well, that was for the ladies!! Especially slider's howl... π₯π₯΅ sexy.
The Russian Migs used in the movie weren't Russian at all. Due to the the Cold War between the USA and the USSR, they decided to use Northrop F-5 Freedom Fighters.
The GPZ900R A1s was also painted in European colours .. thats why when the movie hit everyone wanted the GPZ900R A1s but all had wrong colours .. I sure the US colours was black red and silver .. i had the 500 version my 1st bike max speed 121mph i got 130mph an my speedo bust ..
