On Thanksgiving morning 2016, Sherri Papini was found on Interstate 5, 146 miles south of her home in Redding, California, 22 days after she disappeared while out running. She said two women had taken her at gunpoint. For almost four years nobody was charged with anything.

On 13 August 2020 she came voluntarily to a Shasta County Sheriff's Office interview room, with her husband Keith, to meet an FBI agent and a sheriff's detective. The unidentified male DNA on her clothing had been matched a month earlier, and her former boyfriend had been interviewed three days before. This is that recording, cut with analysis: why the warning about lying comes first, how the investigators lay out evidence before they give it a meaning, the photographs she half recognises, and the moment she is told whose DNA it was.

In April 2022 Sherri Papini pleaded guilty to making false statements to federal agents, a count built from this interview, and to one count of mail fraud. In September 2022 she was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison and ordered to pay $309,902 in restitution. There were never any kidnappers.
