That is the provocative conclusion former Statistician-General Pali Lehohla reaches in this analysis of South Africa’s post-1994 education and economic outcomes.

Lehohla examines why, in his view, Indian and White South Africans have advanced faster in certain areas while Black and Coloured South Africans have been left behind. He argues that one of the ANC’s gravest mistakes was focusing educational support primarily on poorer families instead of creating a system that enabled children from different backgrounds to learn and compete together.

He also highlights mathematics as a critical barrier to advancement and questions whether South Africa’s education policies have created the skills needed for economic participation.

The most controversial question is whether these outcomes have unintentionally validated aspects of Verwoerd’s old economic argument.

I’m a white male 64 years old failed maths in matric couldn’t rewrite as I started my military service but it never stopped me running my own business till today very successful 45 years later

I am a white women in SA, in my day maths was a choice subject from grade 10-12. I couldn't leave it fast enouch, I hated it. I am more creative, peoples person, became an Art teacher and had a wonderful career. What I am saying, all people just don't have the same aptitude or interests. It has nothing to do with colour!!!!!

Those stats on the % of blacks reaching matric look very suspect. I doubt very much if even 50% of them ever get to write matric

I matriculated in 1977 without maths and science although I had Biology and Geography as subjects. I have four degrees and various post grad diplomas. There are many professions which does not require maths and science. There were many white people who never matriculated but went to trade schools and became successful. Many of our parents and grandparents, especially the women, barely completed primary school but we're literate and could work with numbers. As a teacher I abhor the chasing of pass rates and meaningless matric certificate with zero focus on the development of the child and the acquisition of real knowledge and skills. I pay taxes and paid for both my children's university up to post graduate level. Many of my friends at school coil spring not afford tertiary education.

Convincing a community where where no one gets to grade 10 is a big haul to motivate them to strive for a grade 12.
I saw that on a farm with coloureds, only one person could read out of 14 adults, so they wanted a child to work on the farm instead of going to school.

To succeed in maths or advanced maths requires training at a young agr with the correct abilities. Not all people or children have the ability to shone in maths or many other scientific subjects.

Additionally, the foundations need to taught to ensure understanding and not rote teaching. Refer to certain authors and major mathematicians.

We have to take accountability for our cultures, quality over quantity... My parents had to choose who could study, all three of us couldn't study. Today I have only one child, not out of choice but that's all I can afford... We do a lot of social work in rural communities and the amount of child headed households would blow you away, then we're not mentioning the child neglect, alcohol fetal syndrome.
