She is my son’s favorite artist and we are getting to see her live next month in the states

The translation is actually pretty accurate, and you can sing alone with it too :D

The main character is human, but due to an incident that occurs he has organs transplanted from another person involved in the incident. Those were actually the organs of a ghoul, and when he wakes up from the surgery he has become a weird half ghoul, half human hybrid. He does not really fit in either the human society or the much more dark and dangerous ghoul society that live in secret among the normal humans trying to live out their lives while being hunted down by humans. Probably enough context to understand the lyrics a lot more without giving away things from beyond episode 1.

Also this is probably my favourite Ado live performance, such a good cover of the original song which is widely regarded as one of the best anime openings.

As a side note, the original singer T.K has a live version of him singing it on the First take youtube channel if you want to check that out.

Btw when she screamed it was actually her voice echoing that’s how strong her scream was

Its actually crazy how listening to any Ado song, or just Ado sing any song can get you super emotional, and always in the way the song intends, even if you dont understand the language. I cant speak much Japanese, and still just listening to this makes me teary eyed, the feeling of not beloning, and all in the song, its conveyed even without speaking the lanaguges.

Ado is a generational vocalist for sure

Her singing is so charged with emotions it messes me up 😭 i’m crying help

同じ日本人でも、この歌い方で、この一曲は、歌い切れる人は、少ないです♪

I'm from Ukraine and I have never listened to Japanese music before I listened to her And she's so talented I love her So much

my daughter wanted tickets for her birthday , watched ado at O2  london , not my genre but fuck me shes got some vocals, the band were just as good and the lighting effects were off the head ,best concert i've been to

Full context to understand why this performance is the best of the best in decades:

During 1990s~2010s, there was two whole decades that there were almost no hardcore rock songs with negative theme being accepted as anime openings. So, an anime theme song like <unravel> went VIRAL at that time because it is so unique and tensed with negative emotions. On top of that, the insanely difficult high notes and screams is also self-explanatory.

Thus, <unravel>(at least for me), is the Mount Everest/Holy Grail of anime songs during the 2010s.[1] Nobody except TK could do it justice.

Considering that Ado debuted originally as a cover artist on the Internet, I can imagine that this song was the first few things on her "to-conquer" lists of covers. Also, from the fandom perspective, we are sure that "If anyone on Earth could do a perfect <unravel> cover, Ado IS THE ONE." She is the "Sir Edmund Hillary" of cover artists.

So, unsurprisingly, (or should I say surprisingly), she exceeds our already-high expectations in 2023 by releasing this cover. You could even argue[2] that she out-performs TK's version at the last chorus by jumping between various textures at ease. Her signature "playfulness" and  "voice acting"  blended perfectly into the song.[3]  What's more inspiring is that she did not do those techniques because she is showing off her skills, but she tries to “serve” the song and convey pure, raw emotions.

That's why this performance is so precious and will always be my 10/10.

[1]: Proof of my statement: Search for "unravel cover" on Youtube, and you will find surprisingly few covers despite how famous this song is.
[2]: Many professional vocal coaches commented Ado's interpretation as slightly over-exaggerated and dramatic to fit the main character (Kaneki)'s story; TK's The First Take version is the more clever, accurate and artistic one. I agree with such claims. That's why it's arguable.
[3]: I borrowed the term from another Youtube vocal coach, but yeah, that's the best single word to describe Ado's philosophy. Tim's comment at 6:25~6:42 in this video is also referring to the same thing.

The "delay" effect was an actual echo in the arena. Pretty awesome not going to lie

This is my favorite from Ado, despite it being a cover. She put so much emotions in her vocals. That scream at "unraveling the world" is so guteral and makes me cry everytime I hear it. It comes after she does a very panicked "I can't move!" She is basically putting all the emotions of the main character from what I understand.

The other guteral part closer to the end, she screams "don't forget me! Don't forget me!"

i love that you actually did the research into this song and made it all into 1 video.

EDIT : that garden hose analogy is so helpful. i don't think i've heard anyone describe how to sing like that so accurately.

You should check out her "Where the wind blows" live from Osaka Expo 2025!

Those translated lyrics have been altered quite a bit for the sake of rhyming in English. For a few examples:  "Please tell me, please tell me how it works. Who is it that you see in me? I'm broken, I'm broken in this world. You just laugh without seeing anything" is quite a bit different to what's written in that intro and the whole song is like that. "The broken me, I hold my breath and I won't unravel. Oh, I won't unravel; even the truth, [freeze]." Goes on to call the world warped, not "keeps on changing," that they're gradually becoming transparent and disappearing, no hiding away or "true self." Kawatteshimatta kaerarenakatta, futatsu ga karamaru, futari ga horobiru . . . anata wo yogosenai yo = I changed unintentionally and couldn't change anything; two things intertwine and two people are destroyed．．．I can't taint you

I'm convinced Ado and Beatpella House combined could make any sound in the universe at any pitch all acapella.

I absolutely love the way you throw yourself into a topic.  I came for the beatboxing, I'm staying for the depth of passionate interest.

goosebumps is just your skin trying to applaud her

My recommendation for next songs to check out would be "RuLe" and "Tot Musica"!  Love your reactions, your research, and your insights!

you are the first reactor that actually listens to the full thing first without cuts, that's usually my pet peeve when watching these kinds of videos. great video man!
