We never cease to be amazed at how much a small black-and-white photograph of the family of Emperor Alexander III can reveal. And a wise museum curator, glancing at an old photograph, will reveal even more:

What color dress is the Empress wearing?
Where did the Parisian carpet in the St. Petersburg photo come from, a carpet that was never seen in Russia?
Did Nicholas II know that two lines in his youthful diary would help him make a scientific discovery?

Alexandra Nikolaevna Farafonova, Head of the Scientific and Archives Department of the Gatchina Museum-Reserve, reveals the profound secrets of a small photograph donated to the museum by Mikhail Konstantinovich Malikov.

You can see the photograph of the royal family at the exhibition "The Most Important Thing in My Life... A Danish Princess on the Russian Throne," dedicated to the 175th anniversary of Empress Maria Feodorovna, the wife of Alexander III and mother of Nicholas II. The exhibition is open at the Gatchina Palace until March 5, 2023. Until then, anyone identified by the name "Maria Feodorovna" can enter the palace free of charge upon presentation of an original document at the box office.
