In December 2000, IBM and a small Israeli company called M-Systems brought the world's first USB flash drive to American desks. The DiskOnKey held 8MB, cost $50, and helped push the floppy disk into retirement. Six years later, M-Systems was a $1.5 billion flash storage giant, and SanDisk absorbed it in an all-stock deal that founder Dov Moran would later call both his biggest success and his biggest failure.
