Excellent, thoughtful and articulate analysis. I love that you acknowledge how awful her performance was, but still retain some humanity. The most balanced take I’ve seen yet.

RayGun had no business being at olympic level. As an Australian, please don't give her anymore air time.

"They started from the very beginning to where they are now, which still looks like the beginning" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Raygun is the equivalent a tone-deaf American Idol contestant who has a family who tells them "you're a great singer" and somehow they get through the audition rounds.

She walked into the Olympics like they owed it to her, fully aware she was shit, yet still entitled enough to snatch a spot from someone a million times better. The truth is, her privileged background enabled this: money, resources, connections, all clearing a path for her while a genuinely talented athlete without any of that got shut out. I have no sympathy. She deserves all the mockery.

What I got from the doc was that they were absolutely delusional and Sammy is absolutely in love with her lol the way he describes her dancing was like watching Hal fall in love Lois’s dancing.

She had the money, connections, privilege and power to get her into that position to be at the olympics and the whole time she just told herself “we’re such a small community, I know I couldn’t keep up with the competition but I’ll try”. Instead of trying to scout for anyone who had the talent or the skill they just went with her, not only that but she knows the people selecting her, she knew the privilege and power she had and she knew she wasn’t good enough for the Olympics and instead of using that power and those connections to find a young person who has what it takes she just said “oh well I guess it’ll just HAVE too be me then”

I don't know the specific rules the Australians had in place, but generally speaking, an Olympic selection committee can declare a spot vacant using the quota only partially, if no other athlete meets the standards, and this is why so many folks will continue to be convinced that her qualification was corrupt.

Around the 2000s breaking experienced another global boom.

For the Olympic qualifying event, the standard format begins with a pre-selection round to determine the top 16, who are then divided into four round-robin groups. The top two from each group advance to an elimination bracket. Because only 15 B-girls entered, the pre-selection was used to identify the top eight, who bypassed the group stage entirely. In contrast, the B-boys' competition had 37 entrants, so the full format was followed.

I legit beleive that her husband is the reason why she didn’t perform as well. He was the coach for Raygum and he should have told her she’s terrible and needs to train harder, seek better coaches etc

As someone else said, “She didn’t break dance that day.  She broke dance forever!”

I saw a video a guy made explaining things from his perspective. He lives in Australia and has been breaking for over 10 years. He was making the point about how it's just not that popular in Australia and not many people do it. He later was showing places they used to practice in that were now things like restaurants and explained that they had nowhere to go to dance in private. This told me a lot about the breaking culture in Australia. In the US, and from what I've seen when I've been in Japan, breakdancing is very interactive. People who do it are on the sidewalks, in the park, on the basketball courts, etc. All you need is a music source and a couple cardboard boxes. Many times people passing by will stop and take an interest. You then have more people who support it and more people who want to do it. You can join in if you want. You can learn from others. For a big competition they may train sometimes in studios or something but the majority of your training comes from the streets. And because it gets so much more attention it's more popular. I live in the south as well and I see breaking all the time in my area. Much of breaking is about community. I've seen kids like 8 or 9 who are just starting out and are already better than Raygun. If in Australia they want to learn and practice where people can't see them and be so private about it then no wonder there wasn't anyone better. Barely anyone is going and seeking out breaking but a lot of people will take an interest if they see it around them.
I have to disagree that anyone would make the decision to still compete in the Olympics after realizing how bad they are. I think anyone who has any respect for the integrity of breaking would not want to disgrace the community, much less a whole country, by staying. I don't think many people would be that incredibly selfish. Look at what she caused. It's been dropped from the Olympics altogether mainly due to her. If she truly loved breakdancing she would have quit out of respect. Now she's playing the victim. Even when she admits to being wrong its followed by something condescending basically saying she is actually good and others just don't know enough to realize it. It's crazy. She's damaged her own reputation, horribly. She could have admitted she was awful, said she didn't realize it at first, and laughed with everyone else and she could have become a cultural icon, but that's not what she did. She got offended, took herself way too seriously, and now wants to lecture everyone on having a very reasonable reaction, from laughing at her performance to being offended as a member of the breakdance community or a fellow countryman, to being angry at the damage she has done. I don't agree with everything people said because some of it was uncalled for and cruel but she put herself in this position, more so by doubling down. I don't care if she was the best in Australia, which is still astounding to me, she should have dropped out.

As an australian, sorry...

You have people saying she tried!😝😆🤣😂 Hahahaha they seriously need to seek help.

“Which was really distinctive because it looked really bad” you’re hilarious 😅

I saw the final where she won the olympic place. She wasn't the best dancer. The question is why she won that final. She shouldn't have won.

Tiny Locks was the only honest person in the documentary.

Anyone remember William Hung on America idol…he took people laughing at him and went on a world tour and had fun

The Olympics need to have a higher standard, period. Countries who have performers like Raygun need to not be allowed to participate. Taxpayers do not need to fund foolishness.

I was always in band through school as a child and young adult. I was not a good sight reader, but I was really good at playing by ear and timing. what I noticed the most about Raygun is she probably just doesn’t have a natural timing and rhythm  of excellence for the Olympics. There are probably six-year-old children that have excellent timing just because it’s their gift but the rest of us to a certain extent need to learn. Raygun  still seemed very mechanical, like a beginner.
