A family member was a very early employee of Blackberry/RIM in Waterloo and was an “elite” CSR when the iPhone first came out. I had lunch with her when my iPhone 3G was brand new. She’d never seen one. She used it quietly for a few minutes, typing, surfing websites, looking at email. She handed it back and said “I think we’re in trouble.” Yup.
I remember watching the Steve Jobs announcement Live in 2007. Here's a strange historical tidbit that I recall. About 6 months earlier, the Verizon CEO was being interviewed. (Back then the Carrier was #1 and the phone was #2 (i.e. You would choose to have Verizon as your carrier, and they would offer some compatible handsets to choose from)). On CNBC, they asked the Verizon CEO, "What are some innovations you expect in the upcoming year. He said, "We've worked out a deal with the RIAA, so that we can upsell people with 'Custom Ringtones' (eg- You pay $5 for your favorite song to ring when someone calls you) . . . I thought, "That's their BIG innovation? Custom ringtones for $5? . . . Well, 6 months later Apple wiped out their entire business model.
Before iPhone if you were looking at a photo and wanted to see it in landscape, you had to press the arrow keys to go to the menu>view>orientation and click landscape.
In iPhone you just turned your phone.
That's one of many innovations that demonstrates a developer that cared about the user experience.
I was at Microsoft when this happened, and I remember Steve Balmer telling us that no serious business user would give up their keyboard. What he and so many others didn't realize is that people were desperate to do exactly that.
Well the CEO‘s reaction is like riding on a horse carriage watching the introduction of the first car and telling the people to bring more horses and paint the carriage red.
IIRC the top brass at BlackBerry thought the footage of the iPhone was faked. They couldn’t believe Apple got that level of performance and functionality on a portable device
Doug Fregin the guy depicted with glasses and the red bandanna who is also depicted as being useless sold his shares shortly after, making him the wealthiest benefactor in the end. 😂
The first iPhone was the shot across the bow of every other manufacturer. The introduction of the App Store that bypassed carriers is what really sank BlackBerry, Nokia, etc. For a 30% fee, billing and fulfillment was handled for every iPhone in the world on any carrier. No carrier by carrier negotiations, no 70% carrier fee, no building fulfillment and billing infrastructure. Even better, no carrier by carrier API variations, it was the same OS and screen size everywhere.
