Cezzar Ahmet Pasha vs. Napoleon Bonaparte: A Historical Turning Point
Cezzar Ahmet Paşa vs. Napolyon Bonapart: T...

The Battle of Ankara in 1402 was one of the most critical turning points in Ottoman history. On July 28, 1402, Bayezid I faced Timur's army on the Çubuk Plain near Ankara; at the end of the battle, the Ottoman army was routed and Bayezid was taken prisoner. The entry on the Battle of Ankara in the TDV Islamic Encyclopedia states that some of the Kara Tatars in the Ottoman ranks and forces belonging to some Anatolian principalities that had recently come under Ottoman rule defected to Timur's side. This disintegration showed how severe a test the political structure that Bayezid had expanded so quickly faced. The result of the battle was not only the defeat of a ruler. Timur returned the lands of some Anatolian principalities that had previously been eliminated by the Ottomans to their former owners; Bayezid's sons, meanwhile, began to struggle among themselves to establish dominance over the remaining regions of the state. Thus began the Interregnum period in Ottoman history, spanning from 1402 to 1413. Bayezid I died in Akşehir on March 8, 1403, while in captivity. After a struggle for the throne that lasted approximately eleven years, Mehmed Çelebi defeated his rivals, restored unity in 1413, and ascended the Ottoman throne as Mehmed I. In this documentary, we examine step by step the rise of Bayezid I, the reasons for his conflict with Timur, why the Ottoman army disintegrated at the Battle of Ankara, the role played by the Anatolian beys in the battle, and how Bayezid's capture led the Ottoman State into the Interregnum period. We also do not present the famous narrative of Bayezid being held in an 'iron cage' as an absolute historical fact; modern academic studies show that this story is a narrative that grew and became controversial in subsequent centuries.
