Why does the universe exist at all?
This may be one of the deepest questions human beings can ask. Physics can describe how the universe evolved from its early state, how galaxies formed, how matter behaves and how the laws of nature operate. But there is a much deeper question hiding underneath all of that:
Why is there something rather than nothing?
Why does space exist?
Why does time exist?
Why does matter exist?
Why are there physical laws at all?
And could “nothing” ever have been a real possibility?
In this video, we explore one of the oldest and most difficult questions at the intersection of cosmology, physics and philosophy.
We'll look at the Big Bang, quantum cosmology, vacuum states, the origin of physical laws, causality, existence and the limits of what science can actually explain.
The Big Bang describes the early evolution of our observable universe, but it does not automatically answer the philosophical question of why there is a universe in the first place. Likewise, a quantum vacuum is not simply philosophical “nothing”—it is a physical state described within a theory.
So perhaps the deepest mystery isn't what happened at the beginning of the universe.
Perhaps it's this:
Why was there a universe to begin with?
Science has powerful explanations for many aspects of cosmic history, but there is currently no experimentally established answer to the ultimate question of why existence exists.
And that may be what makes this question so fascinating.
