Kristen & Brandon watch Encanto, a vibrant and heartfelt animated musical about the extraordinary Madrigal family, each blessed with magical gifts—except Mirabel. When their enchanted home and family powers begin to fade, Mirabel steps up to uncover the cause and save everything she loves, embracing courage, family, and self-worth along the way.

Directed by Jared Bush, Byron Howard, and Charise Castro Smith (Zootopia, Moana, Raya and the Last Dragon), the film features the voices of Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, In the Heights, Short Term 12), John Leguizamo (Romeo + Juliet, Ice Age, John Wick), Maria Cecilia Botero (La Bruja, En Otra Piel, El Paseo 2), Jessica Darrow (Feast of the Seven Fishes, Encanto, Ode to Passion), Diane Guerrero (Orange Is the New Black, Doom Patrol, Jane the Virgin), and Wilmer Valderrama (That ’70s Show, NCIS, From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series).

She is the replacement for abuelita. She didn't have a door bc the house was always hers. Its why she was the only 2 people you see talking directly to the house and it responding was Abuelita and her.

"Surface Pressure" is such a banger, but man it's tough to listen to Luisa feeling like she has to literally carry the entire family, that she thinks without her strength, she's nothing.

I'm Colombian and this one always destroys me, my abuela also had to go through the forced displacement, several times, my abuelo almost died in the civil war that was going on, seeing this on tv just hits me so hard I can't help but sob every time I hear Yatra singing that song.

One of my favorite little details about this movie is the contrast between how they portray Abuelo‘s death in the beginning of the movie versus how they portray it at the end. In the beginning, when Abuela is telling the story to young Mirabel, she sanitizes it using euphemisms like “Abuelo was lost” and we see a relatively mild expression of grief from Abuela. At the end, Mirabel gets the full picture. Her Abuelo is violently murdered and she sees the full weight of Abuela’s horror and grief, and her lonely journey forward. This film was as much about Mirabel learning about the burdens of her family members, who she saw as blessed and gifted, as it was about her family seeing the hidden gift within Mirabel.

There's nothing wrong with crying at an animated movie. Especially this one.

Abuela literally starts the movie saying "the best way for some of us to help, is to step aside and let the rest of the family do what they do best" and doesn't follow her own advice for the rest of the movie

Luisa is the first feminine character in a movie like this that looks like me. When the movie came out, Disney made more Isabella dolls than Luisa dolls and there was a Luisa shortage. I love her so much

A lot of people feel Abuelas turn around was too sudden. They don't stop to think about the true version of what happened to Abuelo and what had just happened to the family. It wasn't that they lost their gifts that hit Abuela. It's that no less than 3 of her grandchildren were willing to risk their lives to save the miracle because that was what Abuela had taught them was most important. Abuela had to listen to her daughter screaming in anguish, just like she once had, for those few moments when it seemed Mirabel indeed did die trying to save a stupid candle.

It was a slap in the face for Abuela who truly loved her family. She clings to the miracle so much because it kept them safe from the raiders, kept her babies and their babies safe. Until that moment when she realizes she has focused so much on the miracle, has instilled it to be the most important thing for her family that she almost lost one of them. Her daughter screaming in grief just as Abuela screamed in grief.

Realizing that the miracle didn't matter as long as her family was okay. Then realizing how badly she hurt them all trying to protect them.

@kingofnonation5843 10 months ago

Its sort of implied she is the same as the grandma she's the candle bearer

Not only did Abuela lose her husband and became a single mom to 3 young children. But she also had the the entire village thrust on her back at the same time.

Fun Fact : Disney made a bunch Isabella dolls thinking she’d be the most popular, but little girls identified with and requested Luisa dolls more 💗 They had to quickly supply more Luisa dolls 💪🏾

When you think about it, Mirabel did get a gift, the greatest power of all. The powerto keep her family together.

Poor Bruno. Everyone assumed that he was telling the future when he was just normally talking. The woman whose fish died? That was probably a casual, "Hey, this fish looks like it's going to die.." or the guy who lost his hair or the one who grew a gut. You can see that someone is balding or someone is having too many helpings of dessert without it needing to be a mystical thing. He had his vision cave for actual prophecies. But everyone believed every single thing he said. That must have been exhausting. Poor guy probably couldn't make jokes or couldn't be sarcastic without being misunderstood. I would have left too.

I ended up relating to Isabella the most. The pressure to be the perfect one, to not let your family down, even at the expense of yourself? That's rough to deal with; it doesn't excuse how she treated Mirabelle, but I can understand it.

Ironically, I feel that the sisters envied each other. Mirabelle was jealous of the attention and love Isabella received, while Isabella envied Mirabelle for not having constant expectations put on her. I'm glad they were able to mend their relationship in the end.

I come from a Latin family and the most unbelievable part of this movie isnt the magic powers or the living house but a latina grandma saying "I'm sorry, it was my fault". I have never heard an abuela say those words including mine, this movie truly is a work of fiction.

I love that Disney has been tackling the villains we carry within us in their recent films. Self acceptance. Generational trauma. Family trust. Etc. As much as I love a great classic Disney villain, I feel these films hit much harder because every single one of us on some level or another can relate to these sorts of feelings and doubts. And they have also really leaned into their sense of humor lately. A lot of people complain about Disney "losing their way" but I think Disney has actually found its way with the direction they have taken things.

@lka9900 10 months ago

It’s so great for kids to see adults be wrong without being a villain. Abuela was wrong, but she had her reasons and once she really realized, she apologized. Breaking generational trauma.

I am a bit of a weirdo when it comes to how I analyze movies: but it honestly blows my mind that so many people thought Mirabel didn't have a gift.

Other than Abuela: she is the only member of the Madrigal family that communicates directly with Casita, and Casita responds. Mirabel's door 'disappears' because the entire house is her room. She is meant to be the new leader of the home when Abuela passes away.
