As an artist myself, I've always had a fondness for Gwen John. My grandmother was a fellow student at the Slade School of Art in the 1890s under Henry Tonks ... the only UK art school at the time that would accept women. Thanks for your inspiring videos that keep us all informed about what's happening in the arts.

I would love to see a full exhibition of her work rather than the odd painting in various galleries around the country. I also think National Museum Cardiff is a fantastic space. The only problem is the 4 hour journey to get there, so I thank you for this valuable video (while feeling jealous).

i do appreciate many aspects of Augustus John's work, especially the drawings, but Gwen's painting doesn't deserve to be in anyone's shadow. the portraits of individual sitters are stunningly original in there intimacy. i loved that one of the girl with the scarf, which i've never seen before: i mean wow.

...an artist of great sensibility...The little sister towering over her reputed brother...I was happy to be able to capture a number of works, due to the clarity of detail that the movie provides... The presentation stands out... I'll probably try a copy or two...  As for "Britain's Greatest etc.", I would avoid these flashy, vacuous titles...

We went to Cardiff for the day especially, and it was totally worth it. i adore her work. I'm amazed you didn't know the watercolours - and didn't mention that to her, they were as important as the oils, and that in the very few exhibitions of her work in her lifetime, she showed oils and watercolours together, as equal and complementary. And, at the Pallant House show in Chichester, which we also went to, they showed several drawings: cats, and later Meudon scenes as far as I remember. They seem not to have registered with you..I used to work at Christie's and the church sketches came up for sale fairly regularly at South Kensington, which sold the cheaper end of the range, at relatively modest prices - £8-12K for the best, most substantial ones, but then you add commission and VAT (another 1/3) and I could never afford it. (I do wish, please, you would say draw-ings, and NOT draw-rings. And it is DorEEElia, (who married Augustus John, and with whom my mother, a painter,was acquainted, not DorelEEa.)

Passionate and patient in her task of capturing the mystery of the everyday, of fixing the imposing presence of reality.
I am very drawn to her paintings with their desaturated or grayish colors and those discontinuous brushstrokes that seek the essential.
